Coordinator for Ag in the Classroom Education Program

As the only horticulture department in the Ivy League, our faculty, staff and students are working to shape the food systems and landscapes of today and for the future. Our faculty includes more than 40 scientists working across
New York to make discoveries and share knowledge about fruits, vegetables, and landscape plants. They are called on by farmers, golf course managers, urban foresters, government officials and many others to solve problems around the globe
Under general supervision of the Director of the Ag Outreach and Education Program and PI Dr. Travis Park, the Coordinator of Ag In The Classroom (AITC) will take ownership of developing the program, field implementation, and
in-service training for all stake holders of AITC in NYS. Agriculture in the Classroom programs is implemented by state-operated programs. USDA Agriculture in the Classroom supports state programs by providing a network that seeks to improve agricultural literacy
— awareness, knowledge, and appreciation — among PreK-12 teachers and their students.
These projects and programs will reflect the New York State vision for agricultural education and the mission statements of the CALS Department of Horticulture and the New York State Agricultural Education Leadership Council.
The major responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to:
· Serve as Program Coordinator for New York Ag in the Classroom (NYAITC).
· Under Director’s supervision, identify program needs, set program direction in consultation with the NYAITC Advisory Committee and develop annual work plan.
· Develop budget for AITC operations, and report on progress periodically and when needed.
· Coordinate, update, and maintain a web-based resource center for all stakeholders.
· Review and adapt existing agricultural literacy resources to ensure alignment with NYS learning standards and national food & fiber systems literacy standards.
· Facilitate collection and adaptation of teacher-developed lessons and assist in developing teacher guides.
· Work with AITC network partners to develop additional lessons and other resources for volunteers and extension educators who work with school AITC programs.
· Oversee the development and facilitating of professional development opportunities for teachers, extension educators, and volunteers for AITC.
· Assist in the coordination of programming between NYAITC, NY Farm Bureau Education Foundation, and any other agencies with missions similar to the AITC.
· Manage school recruitment, support of network schools and teachers, tracking and reporting, linking schools with community resources, program promotion, and public relations.
· Supervise and maintain the NYAITC web site http://www.nyaged.org/aitc/index.html.
· Work with agricultural education teachers, 4-H and FFA members, and other high school groups in implementing agricultural literacy programs and activities.
· Assist with programming for NY FFA.
· Assist with professional development programming for NY teachers of agriculture.
This is a 1 year term position and its continuation is contingent upon successful performance and availability of funds.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree in agricultural education; and 2+ years of experience or equivalent.
· Knowledge and understanding of agriculture, agricultural literacy, and food system concepts.
· Curriculum development and teaching experience.
· Aptitude and skills with standard computer software including Microsoft programs and HTML programming.
· Exemplary communication, interpersonal, and organization skills.
· Proven history of working successfully in a team-based environment.
· Management experience in working with youth organizations.
· Ability to build and maintain professional relationships with partners of Agricultural Education and Outreach, as well as various constituents including faculty, staff
and students.
· Knowledge of FFA-specific procedures, activities, and requirements. Ability to multi-task, prioritize work and maintain flexibility in a dynamic working environment.
· Proven ability to handle confidential information and provide accountability and ethical judgment on behalf of Agricultural Education and Outreach and Cornell; promote
and understand the perspectives/diversity of the partners affiliated with AEO; and be able to work with a diverse population of consumers.
· Effective problem-solving skills and ability to change program objectives as needed. Must be able to work independently often determining priorities and procedures within
very general guidelines.
· Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
· Master’s degree in education, agricultural education, or equivalent.
· Web design experience
· Working knowledge of outreach education.
· Knowledge of gardening or garden-based learning.
· Experience in agriculture production.
Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
