Renting Farmland: How to Establish and Manage a Good Lease- Wednesday,
February 16, 2011 from 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM at Cornell Cooperative Extension
Center 480 North Main Street, Canandaigua, NY 14424. Thousands of acres in the
Finger Lakes are farmed under rental arrangements, but the parties involved
often overlook important elements of agriculture land rental. This workshop
will take a close look at what should be in a farm rental arrangement to
benefit the farm and the landowner as much as possible. We will share details
about determining rental rates, property tax programs for rented land, and
insurance and legal considerations, with presentations from Carol Maue of
Chamberlain D'Amanda and John Hanchar of the NWNY Extension Team. Class fee:

Feb 19, 2011 -This session will focus on market channels and returns,
marketing opportunities in our region that you may not have considered, and
the importance of tracking marketing costs. How do you know which market

The 2011 Crop Symposium- Cornell Cooperative Extension of Steuben County's
will be held Tuesday, February 22 from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Civil
Defense Center in Bath. Gain a better understanding of key disease pests
affecting field crop yields and quality, and strategies you can use to protect
your crops, learn about problematic weed species and changing herbicide
options. You will also hear more about the latest zone tillage equipment and
the benefits this tillage option holds for Southern Tier Farms. This program
has been approved by New york State Department of Environmental Conservation
for 2.5 pesticide recertification credits in categories 1a, 10, 21 and 23.

Purchasing and Maintaining Small Farm Machinery- Saturday, February 26, 2011.
8:30 AM - 11:30 AM. Cornell Cooperative Extension Center. 480 North Main
Street, Canandaigua, NY 14424. Canandaigua, NY - Your farm might be small, but
the expense of buying and maintaining the necessary equipment for the farm can
be quite large. Nonetheless, power equipment and machinery like tractors,
tillers, and balers are all part of small farm life. In this new class from
Cornell Cooperative Extension, agriculture equipment specialist Jonathan "JJ"
Schell will provide useful information and insights about buying and
maintaining farm equipment. Topics include how to work with tractor dealers,
understanding specifications like horsepower and wheelbase, and what parts of
the machinery need attention season in and season out, with emphasis on
maintenance routines to keep your equipment humming and trouble-free. This
class is especially good for farm operators who are not mechanically-inclined
but need to have the basics to avoid unnecessary costs to the farm. Class

Tractor Workshop for Small Farms- Is there a tractor in your future?
Saturday, March 12, 9 AM - Noon. Small Farmers and Rural Landowners
considering purchasing a tractor or who need some basic operation,
maintenance, and safety practices are invited to attend a workshop being held
on The workshop is being sponsored by Cornell Cooperative Extension South
Central NY Agriculture Program and is being held at Dryden Lawn & Recreation
on Route 13, 54 North St., in the Village of Dryden. The dealership carries
and repairs smaller tractors that are suitable for small farm use.
Instructors include Fred Carpenter, owner of the John Deere dealership, and
Dave Buck, Lansing farmer, who has been actively involved in teaching tractor

indoor in a heated garage.
Fruit Tree Pruning Workshop- Same workshop held on two different days. March
19th and March 26th. This fun, educational workshop is ideal for those that
are new to fruit growing as well as the seasoned fruit grower. The Cornell
Cooperative Extension offices of Schuyler and Steuben Counties along with
Reisinger's Apple Country are offering a pruning workshop on Saturday March
19, 2011 and will be repeated Saturday March 26, 2011 from 9am until noon.
Instructor Rick Reisinger will demonstrate pruning techniques on apples, stone
fruits, nuts and berries throughout his family orchard at 2750 Apple Lane,
Watkins Glen, NY 14891. Other topics that will be covered include grafting and
apple tree and renovating an older tree to improve fruit production. This is
an outdoor demonstration; participants should dress for the weather.
Preregistration is required by March 4, 2011 for admission to either workshop.
The fee is $15 per person or $25 per couple. Cider and donuts will be

Free Assessments and Incentives Available for Farm Energy Upgrades- NYSERDA's
Agriculture Energy Efficiency Program provides free assessments (up to $1,500)
to identify cost-effective energy improvements. Grants are available for up
to 75 percent of the costs to update lighting, install high-efficiency motors
and fans, and other projects that will save energy. According to NYSERDA, a
typical farm can save $2,700 to $4,000 per year on an investment of $4,800 to
$7,000. Funding is extremely limited and farms will be chosen on a first-come,
first-served basis. It's important to act very quickly to sign-up if you are

NATURAL GAS EXPLORATION SEMINAR: NY Gas Development Update & Leasing
Considerations. An educational seminar on natural gas exploration is scheduled
for Monday February 28th, from 7pm to 9pm at the New York State Grange
Headquarters in Cortland, NY. The seminar will focus on future leasing
considerations, how to ensure an expired lease is released by gas companies
along with an update on gas development in NY. Brett Chedzoy, an expert from
Cornell Cooperative Extension will be providing an update on the current
status of gas development in NY and highlight key leasing recommendations for
landowners. Joe Heath, Esq. will be on hand explaining the process of getting
an expired lease released by a gas company. He will also share some of the
tactics gas companies are using to attempt to extend existing leases, some of
which are preventable. The seminar will also take a glimpse at our neighbors
in Pennsylvania, painting a picture of what our landscape may look like when
exploration activities commence in NY. This seminar is sponsored by the
