About the Speakers:

Dr. Jennifer Dill (Associate Professor of Urban Studies and Planning at Portland State University and Director of the Oregon Transportation Research and Education Consortium)

Dr. Dill has a Ph.D. in City and Regional Planning from UC Berkeley. Her research interests include the relationship between transportation policy and planning and land use, health, and the environment, travel behavior, and transportation finance. She serves at the Chair of the TRB’s Committee on Bicycle Transportation. Prior to entering academia, Dr. Dill worked as an environmental and transportation planner in California.

Mia Birk (CEO, Alta Planning and Design; Adjunct Professor, Portland State University; Author of "Joyride: Pedaling Toward a Healthier Planet")

In addition to serving as the City of Portland's Bicycle Program Manager, where she led Portland's transformation to the country's most bicycle friendly city, Mia Birk has worked as an advocate at an international environmental think tank, during which time she worked with cities in developing countries on transportation energy conservation strategies.  As a Principal and CEO of Alta Planning and Design, she has also done consulting work with communities nationwide on hundreds of bicycle and pedestrian planning projects and expanded the firm to become the nation's leading firm specializing in bicycle, pedestrian and trail planning, design and implementation.  She teaches bicycle and pedestrian planning at Portland State University and is the founder of PSU's Initiative for Bicycle and Pedestrian Innovation (IBPI).

Joe Kurmaskie (bicycle advocate, author, and performer)

Joe Kurmaskie has been called David Sedaris trapped in the body of Lance Armstrong. He's a cycling advocate, syndicated columnist, performer and the bestselling author of five books - including Metal Cowboy; Mud, Sweat and Gears and Momentum Is Your Friend. When he's not rallying against 12 lane bridge projects or being chased through Botswana by 12,000 pound elephants for charity, he's rolling out projects such as Cadence Press - which published Joyride: Pedaling Toward A Healthier Planet by active transportation pioneer Mia Birk.
