Title: Re: [Corpus-Paul] Voluntary Associations and the Pauline C
J.C.

In addition to the resources already mentioned (such as Kloppenborg and Wilson's edited volume, esp. K.'s introductory essay and P. Richardson's piece on synagogues as collegia), I (shamelessly) point you to my recent essay in the Jan 2006 issue of NTS: 'Decrees and Drachmas at Thessalonica: An Illegal Assembly in Jason's House (Acts 17.1-10a)'. In this article, I argue that the charges and the seizure of payment in the judicial episode in Thessalonica according to Acts 17.6-9 relate to the imperial laws repressing Graeco-Roman voluntary associations. To be sure, this article does not seek to show any influence of the G-R associations on the formation of Paul's churches, but I believe it is a helpful way to see how Paul's churches would have appeared to outsiders. In the essay, I also have a nuanced discussion on the early imperial restrictions on voluntary associations.

Best wishes with the seminar!
Justin K. Hardin

I am preparing to begin a seminar on Social Science Interpretation of the
New Testament with Dr Carolyn Osiek at Brite Divinity School and want to
focus my study on the influence of Greco-Roman Voluntary Associations on the
formation of the Pauline Church.  Does any have suggestions on resources for
such a study?
