Thank you, Fred. Esler has certainly good points, and he is one of the few
scholars who emphasizes v. 1:7 and ch. 16 similarly to me to argue for his
case (mixed audience). On the other hand, his treatment of verses 1:13-15
remains inadequate, in my mind. I consider that a major deficiency in his
otherwise excellent treatment of the audience question. In those verses
Paul really hints that his audience consists only of Gentile believers.
Esler, unfortunately, does not succeed in removing this impression.
