Here's some nightly news. Not only was Jesus a rabbi,
Paul was too. Kirkus (7/1/04, p 613) has reviewed
Chilton's Rabbi Paul, due for publication on Aug 17.
Some quotes cited by the reviewer: "Paul scandalized
both Jews and Gentiles with exactly the same message."
"He wrote that women in Corinth should shut up in the
church." "He despised homosexuality." "He shifted the
emphasis of Christianity from the realization of the
kingdom of God on earth to the discovery of the Christ
within one's being." Apparently Chilton's thesis is
that Paul's real achievement was the discovery of
spirit, "the notion that the truer self lay beyond the
material and the physical". So I wonder why he didn't
call this book "Gnostic Paul"?
Somehow I have a feeling this book will have about as
much merit as Rabbi Jesus. Not much.
