anyone hung on a cross, Christ died accursed and outside the

An important point to bear in mind is that this
interpretation of Deut. 21:22-23 is not found in any Jewish source of the
period. The only person who seems to have understood the verses in this
way is Paul. Thousands of Jews died by the Roman punishment of
crucifixion, and not one of them was ever regarded as accursed by reason of the
manner of his death. On the contrary, they were regarded as martyrs in the
cause of Judaism. The commonest interpretation was that since it was
commanded to take down the body of an executed criminal, a curse devolved on the
authorities if they disobeyed this commandment. This interpretation is
quite rightly adopted by NEB: 'His body shall not remain on the gibbet
overnight; you shall bury it on the same day, for a hanged man is
offensive in the sight of God.' Another interpretation was that attributed
to Rabbi Meir: Since man was made in the image of God, to treat even the
body of a criminal with disrespect is equivalent to cursing God.'
