I did a paper at the national SBL in '99 on 1 Cor 8-10 that has a brief
discussion of "conscience" and some bibliography that might be of use.

http://courses.smsu.edu/mdg421f/All%20Things.htm

In the endnotes, see especially Gregory W. Dawes, "The Danger of
Idolatry: First Corinthians 8:7-13," CBQ 58 (1996) 82-98. He has some
bibliography on pp. 95-97 concerning recent revisions of the range of
meanings for SUNEIDHSIS in Greco-Roman literature and Paul.

I hope this gets through in a timely fashion. We're having some severe
email delays at SMS right now.

Hello All,

NOTE: I apologize in advance for the overlapping e-mail for those of you
who
are on the B-Greek list. A fourth question has been added to this
message
since it relates to Pauline theology which is outside of the scope of
the
B-Greek list.

I have several questions related to the term SUNEIDHSIS which is usually

translated "conscience."

1. Are you aware of any Greek synonyms to this term?

2. Do you think that the translation "conscience" best conveys the sense
of
the term? Why or why not?

3. Do you know if anything has been written recently on this term? (I
have
already consulted LSJ, TDNT, EDNT, TLOT, etc.)

4. How do you think the conscience relates to Paul's concept of
sanctification?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Charles Savelle

I do not think so because "conscience" works against the dominant
personality structure of the ancient Mediterranean. Honour and shame
are external behavioural controls, and can be contrasted with guilt,
which is an interal behavioural control. "Conscience" falls into the
interal category.

A search of ATLA revealed several articles in French. You might also
look in _Biblical Social Values_ edited by Pilch to see if there is
anything in there.

Cheers,

Zeb

As an prelude to doing some statistical analysis on infinitives, this
evening I parsed a copy of greeknt.mrp (based on NA26) into an Access
database. The first query I ran was to count the word totals in each book.
My query counts for the traditional Paulines are shown below, confirming
exactly the counts previously posted:

Rom 7111
1Cor 6829
2Cor 4477
Gal 2230
Eph 2422
Phil 1629
Col 1582
1Thes 1481
2Thes 823
1Tim 1591
2Tim 1238
Tit 659
Phlm 335
Heb 4953

Counts for the other books were:
Matt 18346
Mark 11304
Luke 19482
John 15635
Acts 18450
Jas 1742
1Pet 1684
2Pet 1099
1John 2141
2John 245
3John 219
Jude 461
Rev 9851

Ron Price says:

>> The following word counts are taken from A. Kenny's _A Stylometric Study
of the New Testament_ (Oxford: Clarendon, 1986, p.14). They are based on
_The Greek New Testament_, (K.Aland et al., 3rd. edn., 1975).

Rom 7111
1 Cor 6829
2 Cor 4477
Gal 2230
Eph 2422
Php 1629
Col 1582
1 Th 1481
2 Th 823
1 Tim 1591
2 Tim 1238
Titus 659
Phm 335
Heb 4953<<

Dang, beat me to it!

According to A. Q. Morton & James McLeman, _Paul, the Man and the Myth_
(Harper & Row, 1966)

Rom 7106
1 Cor 6814
2 Cor 4472
Gal 2233
Eph 2415
Php 1630
Col 1579
1 Th 1481
2 Th 822
1 Tim 1591
2 Tim 1238
Titus 657
Phm 336
Heb 4951

The book does not say which edition of the NT was used, but I believe I read
elsewhere that it was the then-current standard edition of the Greek NT
published by a recognized bible society in the UK (sorry, I couldn't find
the reference - I thought it was in Kenny above, but that book was not
indexed).

Respectfully,
