Title: [corpus-paul] Re: 1st Thesolonians 2:14-16
Thanks Karl and others,
If this is truly Paul, I wonder if he had a pre-Gospel Passion Narrative to get this information, or is it more likely he got this information from Cephas and others in Antioch just the year or two before he wrote this letter?
The truth of these passages lends creedence to the view that the early Christians did indeed blame the Jews for Christ's death. It is insteresting that the Romans are not mentioned.
Thanks,
Mike Burkhimer
You have two good references that defend the authenticity of 1
Thess 2:14-16. Let me add that Abraham Malherbe in the Anchor Bible
Commentary also defends them.
The major article suggesting that they are a later interpolation
is by Birger Pearson, : 1 Thessalonians 2:13-16: A Deutero-Pauline
Interpolation,"Harvard Theological Review 64 (1971):
79-94, reprinted in Birger Pearson, The Emergence of the Christian
Religion: Essays on Early Christianity Harrisburg: Trinity Press
International, 1997: 58-74.
Earl J. Richard, First and Secoind Thessalonians. Sacra
Pagina 11. Collegeville: Liturgical Press, 1995. pp. 119-27, presents
the case for interpolation. He also gives a brief bibliography on p.
127.
Thus Paul scholars are to this day divided on the authenticity of
the passage.
