I saw an exhibition a couple of years ago with a book in
it open to a page on which appeared the word homosexuality.
This was the first known example of the word homosexuality
and it appeared at the end of the 19th century. The word
was invented to provide researchers with a neutral, clinical
term to describe a set of human behaviors. Most of the
research for which the term was invented was medical
or sociological. Most of the research was analysis of
prison inmates: homosexual activity was used as a
predictor for recidivism. In the early 20th century, the term
was useful for blanketing a wide variety of human behaviors
in a variety of social contexts, from hobos to frat parties.
Given how the discussion is going, I thought you all might
find this non-NT piece of history interesting. I did when I
learned about it.
