Chris Tilling,
The phenomenon of antithetical expressions in Paul could be read as pauline
rhetorical constructions, some of which adhere to contemporary metaphysical
distinctions and some which do not. To avoid anachronism you might want to
look at contemporary rhetorical practices. The one which comes closest to
my mind is the topic of the contrary, about which Aristotle has a lot to
say in the Topics. He guides us through the meanings of words and their
definitions as a background for the rhetorical praxis of antithetical
expressions. I have an article on this called Contrary Arguments in Paul,
forthcoming in Rhetorical Criticism and the Bible: Essays from the 1998
Florence Conference.
