Yes, the text does seem to 'flow' better without it. On the other hand,
this is an attitude (generally; not merely in the context of marriage,
though this was, of course, a major taboo) which was so widespread that I
would have expected Paul to have it to some extent, even though he clearly
believed that 'in Christ' it no longer applied.
I'm doing my best to find an argument in favour of upholding a passage I
don't like; my wife is a practicing Muslim, and I periodically get this one
thrown at me, along with thoroughly ungodly assertions that I'm 'going to
hell'. I really wonder whether this is original.
