For a different thread I had recommended Bradley McLean, "The Absence of an
Atoning Sacrifice in Paul's Soteriology," New Testament Studies 38.4 (1992):
531-53. McLean provides a helpful review and interpretation of sacrifice in
Israel. He brings out the importance of blood as sacred detergent effective
in cleansing the altar of the contagion from sin.
