Any discusssion of the role of women is bound to quickly turn to P's
supposed directive that 'women must keep silent in church' so I thought I'd
grasp the nettle straight away!
Paul was aware that amongst Jewish circles, Gen 2: 21-2 (Adam's Rib) was
used to demonstrate the inferiority of women and countered this in 1 Cor
11: 11-12 (both equal before God)
Jeome Murphy-O'Connor argues* that the offending 1 Cor 14 could not have
come from the pen of P. and was therefore a later addition designed to
bring it into line with 1 Tim 2: 11-14 (let the woman learn in silence)
Thank-you Maggie for starting an interesting thread.
Chris.
