I think the idea was in discussion already: to ask musicians on Song Storm list to donate a song or two under some open license (Authoright is the best, in my view), create a CD and sell it. Participation in the disc can bring a considerable exposure for an artist and, who knows, may bring something to Open Studios.

There is another one. I don't know what would be the legal standing for it, but can we open our on-line store for all listed artists for some tiny revenue share?

Or to mary two: if, say an artist donates a song under Authoright, another one is free to sell unconditionally via our store... Something like that.

Hi, Francis: Good to hear from you. The MD charter (I think you mean
registration for Internet sales tax reporting) is still in process. I'm
waiting for either mailed documents from Kim Smith (March 10th), or an
updated web site for getting the documents downloaded in a reasonable
time. I'm glad you reminded me. I'll follow-up in mid-May, and keep
you posted.

On the topic of IRS, there's a five year probation period. The Award
Letter pages are at:
http://www.ibiblio.or/studioforrecording/irs/
Another good idea, Francis, and thanks for the reminder. The pages need
to be rescanned and enlarged, so they're readable.

Anyway, during that time, the IRS looks for such things as how much is
donated by the Public, and what other forms of income are being
generated, such as grants, fund-raisers, etc. This info, combined with
how the money is spent, helps them determine if the organization should
be granted permanent charitable status to continue its tax-exempt
ruling. Right now, we are not performing well. For starters, I need to
make changes to our online shop that will stimulate purchases by you,
the Board Members, and other volunteers, to show the IRS, we have active
financial support from within our group. So, everyone has to speak up
and let me know what I can add or change in our online shop that will be
successful, and you'll all purchase something.

Don't worry about time, Francis. It's just great to have you stop by
and throw out reminders and ideas. That may be our greatest strength
going down the road.

One idea I've been mulling around, and will act on, is to schedule a
demo for the studio, with some folks in a low-income neighborhood, and
put the clips up on the site. Seeing, is believing, is a saying that
still holds some truth. So, we'll work to make that happen.

Other ideas, reminders, suggestions?
Tom

Hi Tom,

I'm not familiar with all the requirements to maintain the status.
Has the MD charter been completed? I saw a number emails.

I continue to try and put things in order so I can help, more.
I can still provide advice and I have been working on Linux box for AZUR?
I hope to be off from work some time soon. Then be able to contribute a
little more time.

Hope everything is well,

Francis

Subject: [Open_Studios] Ideas Challenge

Hi, Everyone: Today marks a new chapter for Open Studios. Time for all
the lurkers, and everyone in general, to step up and throw some ideas
out for discussion.

For starters, please note that from now on, all messages sent from me,
will have the reply-to address filled in as
community_studios AT lists.ibiblio.org

If you have a private message, you'll need to edit this field, or have
it show up in the list archive. This step is designed to facilitate
open and frank discussion for all participants/volunteers.

I need your ideas on what we should focus on to make Open Studios
successful, prosperous, and able to convince the IRS that we deserve to
be a charitable organization. Any and all ideas welcome.

I will be working full-time on Open Studios and SONG STORM from here on
out, so the challenge is to make me work! Can you do it?
Hoping to hear from all of you, soon.
Tom
