Here's an often asked question that deserves an answer.
A song file, when recorded on a computer, is a series of 1's and 0's.
That's it! The file can then be displayed with instructions to display
it in a variety of ways. Using an audio format, or converting the audio
format once again, to a musical score format, or converting to an
editing format for changing the 1's and 0's to take out unwanted noise,
or adjusting the tone quality, or whatever.
With that in mind, then, since all computers can perform exactly the
same, it's just a matter of getting the best quality software that
allows the most control over the 1's and 0's possible for that
particular computer. (note: the software costs nothing)
So, if you get a computer and load it with the best quality software
available, you now have everything needed to make high quality CD's,
DVD's, audio and video production at every level. A nice microphone,
good speakers, a monitor screen, and hardware to add equipment, all
improve upon that starting point of a computer, and high quality
software.
So, to answer the question: What does a community-based recording studio
look like? Just imagine a kitchen table, computer on it, and the
dishwasher not running!
So, why doesn't every community already have a community-based recording
studio?
