Flip side to file sharing
Critic at Large (David Hinckley)

Hi, David: First, you are perpetuating the RIAA myth that they are the
only legitimate music available. You do this by not mentioning that a
whole ton of musicians are out there with the prefix independent
attached to their names.

When P2P file sharing takes place, a significant percentage of song
downloading is for songs by independent musicians that are not
recognized, under contract with, or associated with the RIAA in any
shape or form.

When you give credence to the Pew folks, who are putting out severely
distorted reports in their quest to generate good feelings from
potential big donors such as the RIAA, you also need to point out they
do not factor out the independent artist consideration.

In the last six months, Nashville has had a rash of closures of small
record labels, vacancies for offices, which traditionally housed folks
that cater to the independent artists. Look behind this, and you'll
connect a dot or two. How about tracking the emergence of independent
artists making their own recordings, setting up shop on web sites, and
working with the tools the Digital Age gives them?

Our work with setting up SONG STORM included research into what is
coming, what is happening with music, and it showed us that the
infrastructure for getting at music is changing radically, and quickly.

The RIAA wants everyone to believe they have the music people want to
listen to. The P2P downloaders want the world to know there's a whole
lot of talent out there that is looking for an audience. And, it's
getting a lot easier with projects such as Creative Commons Project,
commoncontent.org, etree.org, archive.org, SONG STORM, RadioAid,
Gnomoradio.org, and the list is endless, and continuing to explode.

You need the RIAA to pay you a lot more to write their PR for them, eh?
Thanks,
Tom Poe
