Apple will 'make RIAA beg for mercy' - readers
By Andrew Orlowski in San Francisco

"Apple's new online music store, which doesn't own any record labels or
music publishing properties, and which has begged but been refused the
rights to sell low bitrate copies of The Beatles' back catalog, will
soon make the copyright cartel beg for mercy."

Andrew: I think we need to rewrite this article, eh?

Lookit, there are huge numbers of independent artists ready, set, GO to
utilizing the Internet to gain worldwide audiences. Your preoccupation
with taxes and compulsory drugs is what we call "dead space".

You want to see the future? Here's the future.

It's quite obvious, Andrew. Independent artists put some of their songs
on the Internet like the site above, mp3.com, archive.org,
commoncontent.org, sharedsounds.org, and millions of other sites.
What's interesting, is that all of these songs will be licensed through
the Creative Commons Project, with the CC tagging, allowing widespread
and easily identifiable licensing information. Is the song licensed to
be shared across p2p? Is the song licensed to be sampled? One click,
and you have your answer. Someone tries to abuse the system, they're
discovered within minutes. The music lovers will self-police, just like
they do now.

Music lovers around the world will have access to artist websites to
check out recording merchandise, CD's that they can purchase, and Fan
Clubs they can join. Fan Clubs are the enforcers of the future. They
find someone abusing performance rights, they report, the artist works
to correct that little problem, and the world is a much better place.
No taxes, no compulsory drugs nonsense. By the way, Andrew, millions of
AIDS patients continue to die each year, because the compulsory drug
licensing doesn't work.

Maybe you should refocus your attention on how the future of music
works, and forget scammers like iTunes and other "middlemen". The
independent artists can do very well without them, thank you.

One last point. Can you plug our "Farewell To The RIAA" party we're
hosting in 2005 at the Burning Man Festival?
