Hi: Matthew, the intern, brought over the Mac recommendation page. He will
email it to me later, and I will add it to the web site. I will, at the same
time, change the homepage to reflect our new position, that of recommending a
starter setup for PC and Mac. The Mac setup is ready, and the PC setup is
close to being ready.
This will be an exciting turning point for Open Studios. It means that folks
can get the right donated computer, plug in the CD, and be set up to make
recordings, and hook up to the Open Studios network for support and
maintenance of state-of-the-art equipment. Nice, eh?
Tom

Ignorant Legislators in Michigan, by Dan Gillmor:
"When lawmakers create stupid laws, they reduce respect for the what they do
and injure civil society. With hardly any notice, but with the obvious
connivance of a copyright cartel that doesn't care what damage it does to the
rest of us in its pursuit of total control over copyrighted material,
legislators are being herded into passing laws that basically ban common
computing practices -- including some that are fundamental to your online
security.
Ed Felten warned us a few days ago, and now the evidence is worse than we
expected. Michigan Act 328 as amended and taking effect today, makes it
illegal to communicate with your office via a VPN, for example, say people
who understand this bizarre statute. Unbelievable stupidity."
--------
It's worth the read, and the links are informative. A dozen or more states
have already fallen for the RIAA trick, and more to come. Check out your
state, and see what goofiness you might find.
Thanks,
Tom

Hi: I agree. Non-free software folks have their own sales force. They
don't want "volunteers" misstating their capabilities. :)

Hi: Exciting times, we're in. Matthew Laramie has a Mac-based basic
recording studio recommendation that Open Studios can start with. You can
see it by the link from our updated homepage, or here:
http://www.ibiblio.org/studioforrecording/laramierec.html
The PC-based recording studio setup is getting closer. We will announce that
soon.
And to think that just four months ago, we could only offer communities
assistance to try and round up US$15 to $35 thousand dollars, in order to
start a community-based recording studio.
At this rate, we'll have to pick up the pace, because it could quickly become
a necessity to offer video/DVD/CD capabilities as well!
Thanks,
Tom Poe

Hi: Times are changing. Soon, with the help and expertise of folks on this
list and others, recording studios will be as accessible as any pencil is
today.
We just put up the Mac basic recording studio recommendation, and will soon
follow that with an extraordinary PC-based basic recording studio
recommendation for folks wanting to start community-based recording studios
that offer free recording services for all local residents.
Thanks,
Tom Poe

Tom, why is this based on machine that hasn't been manufactured for 4
years?
I know you can get them on eBay, but surely there is a reasonable
option that works with an eMac.
