Hi Giorgos,
One of the things I've been helping with at IBM Research is how we can use diverse (and often freely available) data sets to train our machine learning models to categorize data that the models haven't been exposed to before.
A simple overview: get data of labeled movie reviews from a free and open data set, and train it to decide where a comment is "positive" or "negative" about a certain topic. Then apply the model to a discussion on a software brand and see if we can improve the model by using completely different data sets.
How does this relate to CC? Well, there's a great deal of freely available data out there, and we can use it to build these models. Usually it's not as simple as the two steps above, but the challenge of using a large collection of diverse data sets to improve work in a specific field is interesting, and can definitely be helped through mathematical / algorithmic research as well as groups like CC and iCommons.
If you want more information or more specific quotes, do let me know.
Thanks,
Wojciech

To add to what Rebecca posted, I think it would be nice if we had a sentence or two from a few of the people on this list on(a) what you understand under commons research(b) what you expect from (or what excites you about) the upcoming commons research workshopYou can post your thoughts on this list, bearing in mind that we will take some of the quotes and include them in the iCommons Annual book.GiorgosOn Jun 18, 2008, at 3:42 PM, Rebecca Kahn wrote:Hello friends (apologies for any cross-posts)
After a discussion with Giorgos, we decided it would be a good idea to
post this request to the Research list. I'm gathering content for the
iCommons Annual for the summit, and am looking for stories about the
Commons Research track.
If any of you are interested in contributing, please give me a shout...
Best
RebeccaHi GiorgosI'm busy compiling and editing the iCommons Annual at the moment( it's going to be slightly different from the Annual wedistributed in Dubrovnik, with much more focus on the iSummititself) and I was wondering if you'd be interested in writing apiece for the Annual about the Research track? We're keeping the articles very short - about 500 words, so it's
not a lot of writing to do, but I think people should know a bitabout the different process and plans for the track, since it'sso unique. If you are interested, then it would be great to have a piecethat explains the peer review process that you went through in
planning the track and deciding on the speakers and papers thatwere to be presented. Also, I thought it would be interesting to include a list ofonline resources that people who are interested in this kindresearch can turn to in order to learn a little more - a sort ofonline reading list, so to speak. Are their journals andpublications online that we can direct people to for this kind of
reading? Also, if there is any other information that you think people whoare interested in research on the Commons should be familiarwith - perhaps some of the terminology and phrases that may beunfamiliar to people who are not directly engaged with thisresearch? Or a short timeline of the development of this research?
Does this sound like something you might be interested inwriting? Or, if not, do you know of anyone else involved in thetrack who might be interested in writing for the annual?Let me know if you're keen (or if you know of anybody else whomight be) and we can look at timing and deadlines after that. All the best___________________________________Rebecca
