Nora, thank you for taking time to speak with the Chapel Hill Public Arts Commission about the Michael Brown mural proposal for the Courtesy Review of the Empowerment Building Mural Project. The following are the commissioner comments
as recorded. Please keep in mind that these remain only suggestions, these are not specific requirements. Michael Brown is well known for his murals around town. Given the location perhaps a community artist could produce the mural. After explanation of the fund raising value of the Brown name, this was revised to request that perhaps Brown
could work in tandem with members of the community in which the mural is being placed or maybe mentor an artist from the community. The dumpsters in front of the mural will detract. Either the dumpsters need to be moved or the mural raised higher on the wall. The overall mutil-racial hands/clasping arms and images from the community with a short written history was a good concept. Maybe the emphasis could be on the images and not so much on the hands/arms. (this may be a cost issue?) Since this is a community-based mural, generic buildings, etc. should not be used, but more specific recognizable images from the past and present community would be better suited. Make sure these images are copyright free. Powerful
community memories can be evoked if images are recognizable. Mural should be designed so as to create an ease of repair, i.e. the bottom 6-8 ft. of the mural should be mostly void of detail or nuances of paint, so that is the mural does get tagged. It can be easily painted out. Response to the question of how the mural would be cared for in future years lacked specificity. Procedure for removing tags (minor repair) Procedure and time table for general cleaning (how often, who would do it) Procedure for repainting (is mural to have a specific shelf life or will be maintained when time and weather warrant it (15 -20 years) What happens to the mural if the current building owner conveys the building to another owner? (corresponds to the previous question)
