Subject: commissiion agenda

Steve,  Please forward the following note as e-mail + the attachments to the commissioners.

Dear Commissioners,

I am sorry I am unable to join you this Wednesday evening.  I will be in Washington DC assessing grants for the National Endowment for the Arts.  I have spoken to Steve.  He is aware of my ideas for the meeting, and Frank and he will lead you through a slight variation on the usual agenda.  Please read the attached letter from me, which will explain my intentions.  One of the goals of the meeting is to begin to hear from you regarding public art so that we can develop a shared vision and mission down the road.  Steve and Frank will be facilitating a short writing, and perhaps later speaking exercise (#6 on the agenda).  I think it will be fun and give you an opportunity to express yourselves.  In preparation for the activity, I would like all of you to think about the following two questions and be prepared to write something about each.  Your statements and comments, will inform a larger discussion about public arts in Chapel Hill in the near future

  1. What interesting public art or art activities in public spaces have you seen or experienced in other communities that might be done in Chapel Hill?
  2. In thinking about the future.  When you leave the Public Art Commission, for what one or two contributions would you like to be remembered?

If you have time, I would like you to take a look at a few public art web sites just to get a sense of what a few other communities are doing with their public arts programs.  The links below are directly to the public art home page.  You may want to explore internal page within each site.

Something to think about.
