Hello CHPAC,

Below are links to several articles in today’s papers: an article about the Contextual Plan in the Chapel Hill News (this is the shortened version of the News and Observer article that printed on Saturday), an article about the Contextual Plan in the Daily Tar Heel, an article about the Community Art Project opening reception in the Chapel Hill Herald, and an article explaining the latest delays with the Southern Community Park project.

- Town panel wants more money for public artwork

2 percent plan goes to public hearing tonight

By Jesse James DeConto, Staff Writer

CHAPEL HILL -- This week a Washington, D.C., artist is putting the finishing touches on a $420,000 stone wall and 40-foot marble bench outside the new Town Operations Center off Eubanks Road. http://www.chapelhillnews.com/106/story/6639.html

- Town may alter public art financing

By: Dave Pearson, Staff Writer

Chapel Hill might make history with a proposed plan to restructure who foots the bill for public art. Residents will have a chance to put in their two cents about what's called the percent-for-art, a possible 1 percent increase in funding for public art, at the Town Council's public hearing tonight. Municipal building projects currently have 1 percent of their total budget earmarked for financing public art, such as decorative benches. http://media.www.dailytarheel.com/media/storage/paper885/news/2007/04/11/City/Town-May.Alter.Public.Art.Financing-2833663.shtml

- Community Art Project to open

CHAPEL HILL -- The Chapel Hill Public Arts Commission's Community Art Project -- "Why" -- will open Thursday with an opening reception from 6-9 p.m. at the Chapel Hill Museum, 523 E. Franklin St.

The reception, which is free and open to the public, will feature live music by Loose Mood, refreshments and a DVD slide show of each work in the exhibition. http://www.heraldsun.com/orange/10-837540.cfm

- Bidding glitch delays southern park

BY ROB SHAPARD : The Herald-Sun

CHAPEL HILL -- The long-planned Southern Community Park along U.S. 15-501 and Dogwood Acres Drive has run into another obstacle -- this time a technical glitch in the bidding process.

The good news for those eagerly awaiting the actual start of construction on that public park is that town staff members feel they can address the bidding problem fairly quickly. Nevertheless, that means repeating a step after what they described as a procedural error by the planning consultant working for the town, Raleigh-based OBS Landscape Architects. http://www.heraldsun.com/orange/10-837901.cfm
