Hello CHPAC,

As you heard at last night’s CHPAC meeting, we are very close to selecting a public artist for the Library Expansion Project.

Again, here’s the background:

On June 12, the CHPAC issued a request for qualifications through CaFE, the online application system, which allows artists to apply for commissions electronically.  The CHPAC received 210 applications from artists across the country.

The CHPAC assembled an Artist Recommendation Committee made up of three public art professionals: Ricardo Barreto, Director of the Urban Arts Institute in Boston, MA; Barbara Goldstein, Public Art Director for the City of San Jose, and Norie Sato, public artist from Seattle, WA.  This committee reviewed the applications on line and participated in two conference calls to discuss the artists’ work.  They narrowed the pool down form 210 to six.  The six short-listed artists/teams were Bill Bell/Joan Brigham, Jeanine Centuori/Russell Rock, Janet Echelman, Beth Galston, David Tillinghast, and Robert Tully.

The Artist Selection Committee made up of stakeholders in this project met on December 1 and selected three finalists.  The finalists are Janet Echelman, Beth Galston, and Jeanine Centuori/Russell Rock.  You saw images of their work last night, but if you are interested in seeing more, here are links to each of their websites: http://www.echelman.com/, http://www.bethgalston.com/, and http://www.urbanrockdesign.com/

The finalists will be in Chapel Hill for interviews next week.  The interviews will take place on Tuesday, December 19 from 1-5 p.m. in the downstairs meeting room at the library.  If all goes well, we will select an artist/team by the end of the night!  Janet and Haig are representing the CHPAC on this committee; however, you are all certainly invited to the meeting.  Please let me know in advance if you plan to attend.

Let me know if you have any questions at all.

Best,

Kate
