Cary Visual Art Supporters, Volunteers and Friends:

You won’t want to miss CVA’s next Public Art in Focus Lecture with acclaimed artist, author, and speaker Jack Mackie.  During his presentation, entitled Towards a Civic Art, Jack Mackie will present an examination of public art as a civic design tool that places artists into the community planning and decision-making processes. This installment of CVA’s Public Art in Focus Series will take place at the Page-Walker Arts and History Center on Tuesday, November 1st at 7:00 p.m.

As diverse and complex as they are, America’s rural and urban communities can share many strategies for the inclusion of public art as a defining civic tool.  Through working in collaboration with artists, engineers, architects, urban planners and the citizens of the communities being served, Mr. Mackie says he has come to understand that, “While public art requires an enlightened attitude, the art of making places public fosters that attitude.”  On November 1st, Mr. Mackie will present a variety of venues for public art, partners, support mechanisms, and funding approaches within the available resources that are required to support relevant creative work.

Jack Mackie is renowned public artist, author and speaker who resides in Seattle Washington.  In twenty-six years of practice in the discipline of public art Mackie has participated in major urban redevelopment and new construction projects, from Wales, U.K to the Miami International Airport.  He co-authored the Art and Design Program for the Dallas Area Rapid Transit Authority, the Aesthetic Design Standards and Design Implementation Procedures for CENTRO Transport Authority in Birmingham, UK, and the Public Art Programs for the Memphis / Shelby County Central Library; the Mesa Performing Arts Center, and the Charlotte Area Transit System.   He is past chair of the Public Art Committee for the Seattle Arts Commission, Vice-Chair to the Seattle Design Commission and Chair to the Seattle Light Rail Review Panel.  He currently serves as Chair to the Port of Seattle Art Oversight Committee.
