This new book by Peter Gelderloos (author of Consensus, Anarchy Works, and How Nonviolence Protects the State) has been wildly popular and igniting important conversations nationwide. The first printing sold out in months, and we sold out of our copies within weeks. A special order for this reading group will arrive April 2nd in time for you to get a copy and join the discussion.

About the book:

"From the Arab Spring to the plaza occupation movement in Spain, the student movement in the UK and Occupy in the US, many new social movements have started peacefully, only to adopt a diversity of tactics as they grew in strength and collective experiences. The last ten years have revealed more clearly than ever the role of nonviolence. Propped up by the media, funded by the government, and managed by NGOs, nonviolent campaigns around the world have helped oppressive regimes change their masks, and have helped police to limit the growth of rebellious social movements. Increasingly losing the debates within the movements themselves, proponents of nonviolence have increasingly turned to the mainstream media and to government and institutional funding to drown out critical voices.

The Failure of Nonviolence examines most of the major social upheavals since the end of the Cold War to establish what nonviolence can accomplish, and what a diverse, unruly, non-pacified movement can accomplish. Focusing especially on the Arab Spring, Occupy, and the recent social upheavals in Europe, this book discusses how movements for social change can win ground and open the spaces necessary to plant the seeds of a new world."

2) Author and organizer scott crow Presents "Black Flags and Windmills: Creating Power From Below" April 8th

We're thrillled to host scott crow at Internationalist Books and Community Center!

Tuesday, April 8th at 7:00pm

"Black Flags and Windmills: Creating Power From Below"

This visual and engaging presentation drawn from scott crow's book Black Flags and Windmills illustrates through stories, analysis and diverse political movement histories how individuals and communities can create collective liberation tochange their own worlds by creating power from below. It covers how the ideas, philosophies and practices of anarchism have grown shaping and influencing modern political movements and tendencies from the post-Seattle alternative globalization movements to the Common Ground Collective after Hurricane Katrina, the Occupy uprisings, environmental and animal rights movements and beyond. It also covers the rise of the surveillance state and the implications of political activism being labeled 'terrorism'. The presentation which is equal parts personal story, radical history and organizing philosophies asks questions about how we engage in social change, the real and perceived challenges presented by the state and power and dares us to rethink how we engage in creating sustainable and liberatory futures.
