1) Call for Bob Sheldon Day Nominations-

Bob Sheldon founded Internationalist Books in 1981, and ran the shop for
ten years, until his death in 1991. More than 20 years after his death,
Bob’s memory endures through the friends, family and community that knew
him, the work he did, and the project he began that has continued for
decades to inspire political action in North Carolina and bring people
together.

In a culture that degrades us and pushes us to see ourselves as isolated,
our desires for revolutionary change as futile and limited by our own
smallness, Bob’s example shows us that living a life of conviction creates
something that can outlast our own times. Remembering Bob inspires us to
understand how our acts of bravery and defiance and the spaces – like
Internationalist Books – that we make and defend have a power that is
bigger than each of us individually, a power to unmake the world we endure
and to create the world we want. Bob said, in 1983, that “the world
situation demands sweeping changes and we must do our part to meet that
challenge. We support the unity and liberation of oppressed peoples
worldwide, and are working toward the day when all oppression and
inequality will be removed from the face of the earth.” We award the Bob
Sheldon Award each year on the anniversary of his tragic death to
recognize and celebrate individuals and groups whose work is done in this
spirit.

Please send us your nominations for this year's Bob Sheldon award.

2) Friday, Jan 24th, Benefit Concert for the Family of Chuy Huerta w/
Diali Cissokho & Kaira Ba and Posifaction

@ 8:30pm

@ The Pinhook

117 W Main St in Durham

Come join us for a benefit concert/ dance party with Diali Cissokho &
Kaira Ba and Posifaction. All proceeds from the show will go directly to
the family of Jesus "Chuy" Huerta.
This will be an All-Ages show.
Suggested donation $7-$20 at the door.
No one turned away for lack of funds.

More about Chuy:
In the early morning hours of November 19, 2013, Jesús "Chuy" Huerta was
picked up by Durham police a few blocks away from home. His family had
called police to ask for help locating him, as he had left home and his
mother was worried about him. Instead of taking Chuy home when they found
him, police arrested him on a months-old second-degree trespassing charge
and took him to police headquarters. In the DPD parking lot, in the squad
car, somehow a gunshot was fired and Chuy died.

The Durham Police Department's internal affairs report has raised more
questions than answers about what exactly happened that night (morning).
Chief Lopez repeatedly refuses to accept any responsibility for what
happened on November 19th, choosing instead to deflect blame and attempt
to criminalize Chuy in death. As the Huerta family continues to demand
answers and justice, members of the Durham community have supported them
in many ways, including at public marches and vigils.

The Huerta family is also in continued need of financial support,
particularly to pay for Chuy's funeral and funeral-related expense. If you
cannot make it out to the benefit concert, please consider donating to the
online fund:

More about Kaira Ba:
Kaira Ba features Senegalese griot Diali Keba Cissokho, vocalist,
percussionist, dancer and master of the kora, the 22-stringed African
harp. Diali hails from a famed lineage of musicians and storytellers
traceable back to the 14th century in his native West Africa. The band is
rounded out by Senegalese percussionist Mame Cheikh Njigal Dieng and four
outstanding North Carolina musicians -- Will Ridenour, Jonathan Henderson,
John Westmoreland, and Austin McCall, each bringing the their own musical
influences to bear. The outcome of this collaboration is an infectious
sound reminiscent of West African dance bands full of unison melody,
adventurous improvisation, fiery solos and polyrhythmic frameworks.

Posifaction is an experimental dance rock band formed in 2013. Its members
are:

Ryan Hurley - Guitar
Quran Karriem - Keyboards

----------------------------------------------------------------------- 5)
Prison Books Workdays Every Sunday from 1 – 4 pm in Carrboro.

For 7 years the Internationalist Prison Books Collective has been sending
books and resource guides, by request, to thousands of prisoners all over
the South. Whether a prisoner is teaching themselves to read, filing a
grievance, or organizing on the inside, we are a lifeline.

And we need your help! Due to an increase in requests, we desperately need
people to help open prisoners' letters and fill packages. It's a simple
and fulfilling way to make a difference and show people they aren't
forgotten.

Every Sunday @ 1pm email us or go to our website prisonbooks.info for more
information.
