1) Become a board member!
Internationalist Bookstore & Community Center is seeking progressive and
proactive individuals to apply to its Board of Directors. Every two years,
the board re-elects new or previous board members to act as a decision
making body for the store.
The Board has four core responsibilities: (1) Staff support and oversight,
(2) fundraising, (3) representing the Internationalist in the broader
community, and (4) strategic planning and visioning for the store’s
future. The last of these responsibilities is shared by all members. The
others are primarily the task of designated committees.
Board members commit to:
(1) A two-year term,
(2) Meetings every two months,
(3) Active service on a committee.
Committee duties vary but usually require five to ten hours of work each
month.
The Board is perfect for those who do not have the time to do a weekly
shift, but want to be involved in an important way. Board members should
be self-motivated and ready to take on projects outside of scheduled
meetings. Ideal board members have special skills or knowledge in an area
that can contribute to the long-term well being of Internationalist Books
and Community Center. Examples include experience in community organizing,
accounting, funds development, non-profit management or law.
If you are interested, send a paragraph bio of yourself to
mockingbird AT riseup.net. Please include details about your interest or
expertise in one of the first three core responsibilities outlined above.
The elections will take place this October at the annual members meeting.

October Political Prisoner Letter Writing Night
The Internationalist Prison Books Collective brings you this month’s
Political Prisoner Letter Writing Night! Write letters and birthday cards
to political prisoners whose birthdays fall during the month of October.
It’s an easy way to let these people know they aren’t forgotten. These men
and women fought for many of the freedoms we take for granted today. If
you can’t make it to the letter writing night then please send a birthday
card from home. You can find their addresses here: http://wp.me/p18Qq1-XC
Herman Wallace, whose birthday was this month, passed away on October 4th.
We will be writing to his co-defendant Albert Woodfox instead. You can
read the program for his memorial service here, as well as links to North
Carolina tributes to Herman:

3) Sunday, October 20th- Group photo for prison books holiday card.
'Tis the season to take a group photo for the Prison Books holiday card. For
those of you who have never done this before, we typically take an adorable
photo of prison books people covering their faces with books. We then send
the holiday card to every political prisoner in the US and inside every
package for a couple months. We will take the photo at the Carrboro space
on this Sunday's prison books workday (10/20/13). Hooray!

8) Prison Books Workdays Every Sunday from 1 – 4 pm in Carrboro.
For 7 years the Internationalist Prison Books Collective has been sending
books and resource guides, by request, to thousands of prisoners all over
the South. Whether a prisoner is teaching themselves to read, filing a
grievance, or organizing on the inside, we are a lifeline.
And we need your help! Due to an increase in requests, we desperately need
people to help open prisoners' letters and fill packages. It's a simple
and fulfilling way to make a difference and show people they aren't
forgotten.
Every Sunday @ 1pm email us or go to our website prisonbooks.info for more
information.
