2)Saturday October 5th- @ Carrboro Town Commons from 2pm to 4pm

The Really Really Free Market- a carnival against capitalism

Because there's enough for everyone
Because sharing is more fulfilling than owning
Because corporations would rather the landfills overflow than anyone get
anything for free
Because scarcity is a myth constructed to keep us at the mercy of the economy
Because a sunny day outside is better than anything money could buy
Because "free trade" is a contradiction in terms
Because no one should have to do without food, shelter, entertainment, and
community
Because life should be a picnic, but it only will be if we make it happen

BECAUSE THERE IS TOO SUCH THING AS A FREE LUNCH!

Everyone is welcome at this free event, where all are encouraged to give,
receive, and create on their own terms. This free and open market will be
a celebration of the cooperation and gift-giving that make life possible
beyond the constraints of capitalist markets. The event is self-organized
by everyone who participates. No authority rules over the RRFM. As at
previous events, we trust that people sharing rather than competing will
be able to find their own ways to cooperate with each other and function
smoothly.

Author event with George Ciccariello-Maher, author of “We Created Chávez:
A People’s History of the Venezuelan Revolution”

Join us at Internationalist Books and Community Center for an author
reading and discussion with George Ciccariello-Maher, author of We
Created Chávez: A People’s History of the Venezuelan Revolution.
chavezbook

Since being elected president in 1998, Hugo Chávez has become the face of
contemporary Venezuela and, more broadly, anticapitalist revolution.
George Ciccariello-Maher contends that this focus on Chávez has obscured
the inner dynamics and historical development of the country’s Bolivarian
Revolution. In We Created Chávez, by examining social movements and
revolutionary groups active before and during the Chávez era,
Ciccariello-Maher provides a broader, more nuanced account of Chávez’s
rise to power and the years of activism that preceded it. Based on
interviews with grassroots organizers, former guerrillas, members of
neighborhood militias, and government officials, Ciccariello-Maher
presents a new history of Venezuelan political activism, one told from
below. Led by leftist guerrillas, women, Afro-Venezuelans, indigenous
people, and students, the social movements he discusses have been
struggling against corruption and repression since 1958. Ciccariello-Maher
pays particular attention to the dynamic interplay between the Chávez
government, revolutionary social movements, and the Venezuelan people,
recasting the Bolivarian Revolution as a long-term and multifaceted
process of political transformation. George Ciccariello-Maher is Assistant
Professor of Political Science at Drexel University.

12) Become a board member!

Internationalist Bookstore & Community Center is seeking progressive and
proactive individuals to apply to its Board of Directors. Every two years,
the board re-elects new or previous board members to act as a decision
making body for the store.

The Board has four core responsibilities: (1) Staff support and oversight,
(2) fundraising, (3) representing the Internationalist in the broader
community, and (4) strategic planning and visioning for the store’s
future. The last of these responsibilities is shared by all members. The
others are primarily the task of designated committees.

Board members commit to:

(1) A two-year term,

(2) Meetings every two months,

(3) Active service on a committee.

Committee duties vary but usually require five to ten hours of work each
month.

The Board is perfect for those who do not have the time to do a weekly
shift, but want to be involved in an important way. Board members should
be self-motivated and ready to take on projects outside of scheduled
meetings. Ideal board members have special skills or knowledge in an area
that can contribute to the long-term well being of Internationalist Books
and Community Center. Examples include experience in community organizing,
accounting, funds development, non-profit management or law.

If you are interested, send a paragraph bio of yourself by October 5th to
mockingbird AT riseup.net. Please include details about your interest or
expertise in one of the first three core responsibilities outlined above.
The elections will take place this October at the annual members meeting.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

13)Prison Books Workdays Every Sunday from 1 – 4 pm in Carrboro.

For 7 years the Internationalist Prison Books Collective has been sending
books and resource guides, by request, to thousands of prisoners all over
the South. Whether a prisoner is teaching themselves to read, filing a
grievance, or organizing on the inside, we are a lifeline.

And we need your help! Due to an increase in requests, we desperately need
people to help open prisoners' letters and fill packages. It's a simple
and fulfilling way to make a difference and show people they aren't
forgotten.

Every Sunday @ 1pm email us or go to our website prisonbooks.info for more
information.
