DURHAM
PUBLIC SCHOOL MOVIE NIGHT "DESTRICTED": THU NOV 10 AT 7PM
'Destricted'
is the next (and last!) film in 'THE LINE: Sexual Frontiers of Popular
Cinema,' a series of screenings and conversations hosted by The Public
School Durham [durham.thepublicschool.org]. Each film marks a different
place where audiences and/or film-makers judged a movie to "cross the
line" at the edge of decency.
Shorts by eight directors examine the
boundary between Eros and porn. Warning: this is a sexually explicit
film, and is intended to provoke a lively discussion for after the film.
AUTHOR REBECCA HILL, "MEN, MOBS, & LAW: LYNCHING AND LABOR DEFENSE IN
US RADICAL HISTORY": FRI NOV 11 AT 7PM
In "Men, Mobs, and Law:
Anti-Lynching and Labor Defense in US Radical History," Rebecca N. Hill
compares two seemingly unrelated types of leftist protest campaigns:
those intended to defend labor organizers from prosecution and those
seeking to memorialize lynching victims and stop the practice of
lynching. Arguing that these forms of protest are related and have
substantially influenced one another, Hill points out that both worked
to build alliances through appeals to public opinion in the media, by
defining the American state as a force of terror, and by creating a
heroic identity for their movements. Each has played a major role in the
history of radical politics in the United States.

month is Bradley Manning.
CROATAN EARTH FIRST! AND ANIMAL LIBERATION
ACTION PRESENT "THE WHALE WARRIOR: PIRATE FOR THE SEA": THU NOV 17 AT
7PM
Brought to you by Croatan Earth First! and Animal Liberation
Action, come watch this compelling documentary about Paul Watson, the
man behind the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and the TV show Whale
Wars.
"Pirate for the Sea" is a biographical film of Captain Paul
Watson, the youngest founding member of Greenpeace Canada. He organized
early campaigns protesting the killing of seals, whales, and dolphins.
Greenpeace ejected him for being too much of an activist. Starting his
own organization, the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, he went on to
sink illegal whaling ships, stopped Canadian seal hunts for ten years,
permanently halted sealing in British Isles, killing of dolphins on Iki
Island, Japan, etc. This documentary witnesses his latest campaigns and
explores the personal and environmental history of this controversial
marine conservationist.
