Here's a look at what's coming up at I-Books in the upcoming weeks!

THIS WEEK

ANNUAL MEMBER MEETING: TUE NOV 1 AT VIMALA'S CURRYBLOSSOM
CAFE, 6PM-8PM

This annual member meeting is for current members and
members who are in need of renewing their annual memberships. At this
meeting (which is more like a party), members vote on new members of the
Board of Directors. This is one of the privileges of becoming a member.
If that is not enough to entice you, Vimala is generously catering this
event at her own restaurant for us. That's right--free food from
Vimala's Curryblossom Cafe, the tastiest food in town :)

If you can't make it to the meeting, please
consider coming by the store to renew your membership. You can also do
so online by following this link:

DUKE ENERGY RATE HIKE HEARING/DEMONSTRATION: WED NOV 2 6:30
(DEMONSTRATION)/7 PM (HEARING)

Duke Energy is seeking an 18.6% rate
hike for residential electricity customers and over 14% for businesses.
That's on top of an 8% increase since January 2010, and this September's
5% increase in fuel surcharges. That's a 30% increase for homes since
the beginning of last year. Come to the Rate Hike Hearing at Durham's
City Hall

Croatan Earth First! will be attending this hearing and
holding signs and banners outside starting around 6:30 p.m. If you want
to help please meet there. The more people who sign up to speak out
against this rate hike the better.

Two carpools will be leaving from
Chapel Hill at two locations 1) University Mall on the Willow side and
2) the downtown Chapel Hill post office (where occupy Chapel Hill is
happening). Carpooling will leave from both of these locations once at
5:20 and a second time at 5:50. (If you are willing to drive or would
like to ride as part of the carpool, contact Sammy (sammy AT ncwarn.org
[2]))

GASLAND SCREENING: THU NOV 3 7PM (UNC CAMPUS)

Acclaimed
documentary sheds light on the natural gas industry's dirty little
secret: the destructive process known as hydraulic fracturing (also
known as hydro-fracking, or fracking). When filmmaker Josh Fox is asked
to lease his land for drilling, he embarks on a cross-country odyssey
uncovering a trail of secrets, lies and contamination. A recently
drilled nearby Pennsylvania town reports that residents are able to
light their drinking water on fire. This is just one of the many absurd
and astonishing revelations of a new country called GASLAND. Bingham
Hall Room 103. Free

CARRBORO REALLY REALLY FREE MARKET: SAT NOV 5 AT
2PM (CARRBORO TOWN COMMONS)

Bring something to share--take something
you need! Everyone is welcome at this monthly event at which people
share goods, services, skills, performances, stories, crafts, food,
games, music, clothing, furniture, plants, and other resources.

OCCUPY
CHAPEL HILL _ONGOING (ASSEMBLIES EVERY NIGHT AT 6PM)_

Come out to the
Peace and Justice Plaza in front of the Post Office/Courthouse at 179 E
Franklin St and show your solidarity with the Occupy Movement. General
Assemblies are being held every day at 6pm. Come if you want to be a

heard! Your presence is welcome at any point during day or night--you
don't have to spend the night to make a difference. Visit the Occupy
Chapel Hill facebook here:

Trans
Discussion Group, co-hosted by the North Carolina Harm Reduction
Coalition and Internationalist Books, is a bi-monthly support/discussion
group for people who identify as trans, genderqueer, or
gender-questioning. Our meetings will provide a safe space for folks to
share and process experiences, be of support to one another, and
organize around issues that affect the trans community. Open to anyone
who needs/wants trans support. Tea and snacks will be provided!

DURHAM
PUBLIC SCHOOL MOVIE NIGHT "DESTRICTED": THU NOV 10 AT 7PM

'Destricted'
is the next (and last!) film in 'THE LINE: Sexual Frontiers of Popular
Cinema,' a series of screenings and conversations hosted by The Public
School Durham [durham.thepublicschool.org]. Each film marks a different
place where audiences and/or film-makers judged a movie to "cross the
line" at the edge of decency.

Shorts by eight directors examine the
boundary between Eros and porn. Warning: this is a sexually explicit
film, and is intended to provoke a lively discussion for after the film.

AUTHOR REBECCA HILL, "MEN, MOBS, & LAW: LYNCHING AND LABOR DEFENSE IN
US RADICAL HISTORY": FRI NOV 11 AT 7PM

In "Men, Mobs, and Law:
Anti-Lynching and Labor Defense in US Radical History," Rebecca N. Hill
compares two seemingly unrelated types of leftist protest campaigns:
those intended to defend labor organizers from prosecution and those
seeking to memorialize lynching victims and stop the practice of
lynching. Arguing that these forms of protest are related and have
substantially influenced one another, Hill points out that both worked
to build alliances through appeals to public opinion in the media, by
defining the American state as a force of terror, and by creating a
heroic identity for their movements. Each has played a major role in the
history of radical politics in the United States.
