Tift Merritt (http://www.tiftmerritt.com)
The Jayhawks (http://www.jayhawksofficial.com/)
Carolina Theatre, Durham
The Jayhawks have reformed with both Gary Louris and Mark Olson back in the
fold. I haven't heard the new one, Mockingbird Time, but what little I've
read said essentially "if you liked Tomorrow the Green Grass, you'll like
this one."
Since TTGG is one of the great rock albums of the 90s, I'd say that's a
reasonably good sign.
Wednesday, October 26

who's playing.
Wednesday, October 26
Carolyn Wonderland (http://www.carolynwonderland.com/)
The Poison Oaks (http://thepoisonoaks.tumblr.com/)
The Casbah, Durham
Carolyn Wonderland was a wunderkind blues guitarist back in Texas when I was
in college, 20 years ago. So I'm not sure whether I'm pleased or a little
sad to see that she's still slogging it out in the midsize Wednesday-night
clubs of America, two decades on.

Wax Idols (http://hozacrecords.com/wax-idols)
Terry Malts (http://facebook.com/terrymalts)
Plowman
La Salamandra, Durham
Could this be a win-win-win for Durham rock-n-roll fans, the nice folks who
own La Salmandra, and the neighbors of 2702 Lawndale, aka the Layabout? We
get more rock (with Mexican food & beer!), La Salamandra gets some new
customers (seriously, I recommend the huitlacoche quesadilla), and Craig's
neighbors get some peace & quiet.
This is Craig's first show at La Salamandra -- let them all know you
appreciate it, assuming you do.

Nightlight, Chapel Hill
Friday, October 28
Widow
Salvacion (http://www.myspace.com/salvacionrocks)
DIVEbar, Raleigh
Widow are a Raleigh metal band who remain true to the classic metal of the
80s, both the NWOBHM and Southern California strains. They're actually
pretty damn good at it -- think of them as Raleigh's Anvil, I guess.
Friday, October 28
Bobby's Fever (http://www.myspace.com/bobbysfever)
Estocada
Slim's, Raleigh
Saturday, October 29

)
The Pinhook, Durham
Another giant ball of craziness brought on by the kids of Durty Durham.
Crazy-ass metal/pseudo-metal/covers-metal/etc followed by dance party
action.
Saturday, October 29
Active Child (http://www.myspace.com/activechild)
M83
Kings, Raleigh
This show is sold out, so much so that Kings was actually trying to spread
the word the other day that people should be seriously wary of out-of-town
scalpers selling faked tickets on the Internet. Watch out!
Saturday, October 29
Ani Stark (http://www.reverbnation.com/anistark)
The Chain Gang of 1974 (http://www.thechaingangof1974.com/)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

)
England's Plagueground
Sibannac
Nightlight, Chapel Hill
This is actually a 4-band tribute bill, with one each of the above bands
covering Nirvana, Choking Victim & Depeche Mode, as well as a pickup band
covering the queercore band Limp Wrist.
Sunday, October 30
The Moaners (http://www.themoaners.com/)
Celebration (http://www.beggars.com/us/news/?read=new-4ad-signing)
Arbouretum (http://www.myspace.com/arbouretum)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill
Thrill Jockey's Arbouretum are one of those bands a lot of my friends like,
and whom I've been meaning to get around to listening to, but haven't yet.
Sorry! I was gonna listen to some tonight but I got sucked back into this
awesome Hiss Golden Messenger album instead.
Sunday, October 30
Asobi Seksu (http://www.asobiseksu.com/)
Boris (http://homepage1.nifty.com/boris)
True Widow (http://www.myspace.com/truewidow)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro
You'll have to make your own peace with the weird Boris collaboration EP
with Ian Astbury; in any case, as far as I know, Ian won't be at this show.
Sunday, October 30
Left Outlet (http://www.myspace.com/leftoutlet)
Whatever Brains (http://whateverbrains.bandcamp.com/)
Grohg
Kings, Raleigh
Grohg is a new heavy metal project from BJ & Stu of the Love Language, plus
a couple of other Raleigh guys. Um, yeah. In any case, Whatever Brains are
always amazing.

P-90s

London Dungeon is a pick-up band of local music veterans, including John

generally seasonally appropriate covers.

Zen Frisbee (
http://www.ncmusichistory.com/2006/02/zen-frisbee-crazy-steven-1994-from-cd.html
)
Shithorse
Local 506, Chapel Hill
There may be some of you who still think that Shithorse are a joke band. You
may yet be about 10% right, but the other 90% of them are a crazy awesome &
hardworking rock-n-roll band. They are TIGHT, people, and spectacular in
every sense of that word.
Zen Frisbee are also pretty spectacular, though I'm obliged to inform you
that they will NOT be recreating their 90s-era Halloween show that involved
flaming pumpkin heads.

Wednesday, November 2
Scratch Acid (http://www.touchandgorecords.com/bands/band.php?id=66)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro
Yes, THE Scratch Acid. I no longer know what to do about reunion tours. My
firm policy used to be to avoid them at all costs, but they've simply become
too numerous to apply a single global rule to.
Wednesday, November 2
Chuck Prophet
The Casbah, Durham
Wednesday, November 2
Whatever Brains (http://whateverbrains.bandcamp.com/)
Sex Church
Nightlight, Chapel Hill
Wednesday, November 2

Motorco Music Hall, Durham
The website says 11pm. On a Wednesday.
Thursday, November 3
Kaki King (http://www.kakiking.com)
ArtsCenter, Carrboro
Pretty much all I know about Kaki King is that she's a powerhouse guitarist
& is friendly enough with The Mountain Goats to have toured with them & to
have collaborated with them on a limited-edition EP, Black Pear Tree, which
was too limited for me to have heard.
Thursday, November 3
Men (http://www.myspace.com/mrandmrsmen)
Tayisha Busay (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Tayisha-Busay)

Calico Haunts (http://www.myspace.com/calicohaunts)
The Ill Family (http://www.myspace.com/theillfamily)
The Station, Carrboro
Does anyone know whatever happened to Calico Haunts in the wake of the theft
of the recorder that housed the only copy of their mostly-completed next
album? Did they start over on the same batch of songs? Write new ones?
Neither?
