Just a few details. First, if it's still Tuesday night when you're reading
this, go to Local 506 and see Pierced Arrows. These folks live & breathe
rock-n-roll in a manner that most other musicians couldn't even conceive of.

Second, WTF is up with this 7 shows on a Tuesday thing? Jesus, people, show
some restraint.

Third, Thursday night (10/20) at the Pinhook at 6:30, Duke Performances is
sponsoring a listening party with Jenks & Heather of Mount Moriah, to be
moderated by John Darnielle.

Longtime local Merge Records pop faves the Rosebuds welcome the latest
addition to the label's stable, Hospitality.

All Day Records, Carrboro

Thursday, October 20
Civil Wars
Page Auditorium, Durham

Thursday, October 20
Phil Cook and his Feat (http://philcookandhisfeat.bandcamp.com/)
Bryan Hooten (http://bryanhooten.com/)
The Pinhook, Durham

Bryan Hooten plays trombone & is a member of the awesome Richmond jazz
ensemble Fight the Big Bull, whom you might have seen in their collaboration
with Phil Cook's band Megafaun at the Hayti Heritage Center last fall, still
one of the greatest shows of any genre that I have ever seen.

Thursday, October 20
Spider Bags (http://www.myspace.com/spiderbags)
Wesley Wolfe
T0W3RS (http://t0w3rs.bandcamp.com/)
Tir Na Nog, Raleigh

This is one of the hottest Local Bands Local Beers lineups I've seen in a
while. Wes Wolfe makes whip-smart self-deprecating popsongs, T0W3RS bring a
manic intensity to their epic psych-pop, and Spider Bags just fuckin burn
down any venue they play.

Thursday, October 20
Puritan Rodeo (http://www.thepuritanrodeoshow.blogspot.com/)
Honeychile
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Thursday, October 20
Lynn Blakey
Dave Wilson (http://www.myspace.com/davewilson1974)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Thursday, October 20
Drew Bowen and Carolina Pine (
http://www.reverbnation.com/drewbowenandcarolinapine)
The Casbah, Durham

Friday, October 21
Wild Flag (http://www.myspace.com/wildflag)
Eleanor Friedberger (http://www.eleanorfriedberger.com/)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

I really really liked the lead-off singles from both the Eleanor Friedberger
& the Wild Flag albums. And in both cases I thought the records as a whole
didn't quite live up to the promise of those first singles.

I've had mixed experiences (as have most folks, I think) at shows by
Eleanor's band the Fiery Furnaces. But there seems to be BROAD internet
consensus that Wild Flag live just absolutely fucking slay, and I think this
is definitely a case where one can trust internet consensus. So I'm psyched.

Friday, October 21
Viva La Venus
Kennebec
Bitter Resolve (http://www.myspace.com/bitterresolve)
Pour House, Raleigh

Friday, October 21
Almost People (http://www.facebook.com/almostpeople?sk=info)

Friday, October 21
Hank Sinatra (http://www.hank-sinatra.com/)

Slim's, Raleigh

Saturday, October 22
Blitzen Trapper (http://www.blitzentrapper.net/)
Dawes (http://www.dawestheband.blogspot.com/)
Smoke Fairies (http://www.smokefairies.com/)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

Saturday, October 22
Dexter Romweber and the New Romans (http://www.myspace.com/dexterromweber
)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

The New Romans are Dex's large band, too large for the "stage" at the Cave,
to be honest, so expect to have the horn section in your lap or something.

Saturday, October 22
The Old Ceremony (http://www.theoldceremony.com/)
The Tender Fruit (http://www.myspace.com/thetenderfruit)
Motorco Music Hall, Durham

The Old Ceremony always give about 135% at their live shows, converting even
their most mannered numbers into, well, *intensely* mannered numbers, I
guess. And their rave-ups rave UP.

Don't miss the Tender Fruit, either, whose album Flotsam & Krill is one of
the great underheard local releases of the past 5 years.

Saturday, October 22
Le Weekend (http://www.myspace.com/leweekendleband)
Felix Obelix (http://www.myspace.com/felixobelix)
Joy in Red (http://www.facebook.com/joyinred)
The Pinhook, Durham

Le Weekend will be attempting to psych themselves up for a Sunday full of
recording. They were darn near flawless at Hopscotch so I hesitate to try to
imagine how they're going to improve on that.

Felix Obelix, in the form of Wendy Spitzer & Billy Sugarfix, will be
performing a live soundtrack to the 1921 Winsor McCay animated short Dreams
of a Rarebit Fiend, which is supremely trippy all by itself.

Saturday, October 22

No Tomorrow
Gnawed
Kings, Raleigh

Saturday, October 22
The Daughter is Ambiguous (http://www.thedaughterisambiguous.com/)
Michael Pisaro & Greg Stuart (http://www.myspace.com/michaelpisaro)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

The Daughter is Ambiguous is the new project from Drughorse Collective
member & dynamite songwriter Ryan Gustafson. The stuff I've heard on the
internet is much more ambient & fragmentary & impressionistic than the music
he makes under his own name.

Saturday, October 22
ANTiSEEN (http://www.antiseen.com)
The Antagonizers (http://www.antagonizers.com/)
The Hell No (http://www.reverbnation.com/thehellno)
Southern Hostility (http://www.reverbnation.com/southernhostilitync)

Monday, October 24
Zola Jesus (http://zolajesus.com/)

Is Zola Jesus the next Kate Bush? Is the current Kate Bush aware of this?

Tuesday, October 25
Mike Doughty & His Band Fantastic (http://www.mikedoughty.com/)
Moon Hooch (http://moonhooch.bandcamp.com/)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

Tuesday, October 25
Gray Young (http://www.myspace.com/grayyoung)
Red Collar (http://www.myspace.com/redcollarmusic)
Look Mexico
Restorations (http://restorations.bandcamp.com/)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Well sure, since the other six shows tonight have only 2 or 3 bands apiece,
what better way to stand out from the crowd than to have FOUR bands on yr
bill?

Tuesday, October 25
The Ghost of Rock
Shonen Knife (http://www.shonenknife.net/)
The Pinhook, Durham

I'm not sure which is more surprising, the appearance in Durham of the
original & still champion inexplicable all-woman Japanese pop/punk/pop band
Shonen Knife, or the fact that the Ghost of Rock reunion is gonna last
longer than just the one show for the OCSC anniversary.

Tuesday, October 25
The Wombats (http://www.thewombats.co.uk/)
The Postelles (http://www.thepostelles.com/)
The Static Jacks (http://www.myspace.com/thestaticjacks)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Tuesday, October 25

Army Navy (http://www.facebook.com/armynavyband)
The Casbah, Durham

Tuesday, October 25
Abraxis Jinx
Ghabrana
MuTTer
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Ghabrana is Ezekiel Graves & David Strader. MuTTer is Tim Herzog (ex-Des
Ark) & Sophie Trudeau (Godspeed You! Black Emperor). Yes really. All the way
from Montreal.

Wednesday, October 26
Tift Merritt (http://www.tiftmerritt.com)
The Jayhawks (http://www.jayhawksofficial.com/)
Carolina Theatre, Durham

The Jayhawks have reformed with both Gary Louris and Mark Olson back in the
fold. I haven't heard the new one, Mockingbird Time, but what little I've
read said essentially "if you liked Tomorrow the Green Grass, you'll like
this one."

Since TTGG is one of the great rock albums of the 90s, I'd say that's a
reasonably good sign.

Wednesday, October 26
Carolyn Wonderland (http://www.carolynwonderland.com/)
The Poison Oaks (http://thepoisonoaks.tumblr.com/)
The Casbah, Durham

Carolyn Wonderland was a wunderkind blues guitarist back in Texas when I was
in college, 20 years ago. So I'm not sure whether I'm pleased or a little
sad to see that she's still slogging it out in the midsize Wednesday-night
clubs of America, two decades on.

Wednesday, October 26
The Bamfs (http://www.facebook.com/thebamfs)
Rvivr (http://rvivr.wordpress.com/)

Somebody call Kings a few dozen times on Wednesday & ask them to tell you
who's playing.
