Still got time to catch tonight's shows!
Tuesday, October 4
Despot (http://www.definitivejux.net/jukies/despot/)
Das Racist (http://www.dasracist.net/)
Danny Brown
Lincoln Theater, Raleigh
Tuesday, October 4
The Renderers (
http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Renderers/120773844663735)
Sore Eros (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Sore-Eros/63085215837)
The Suzan (http://www.thesuzan.com/en/index.html)
Local 506, Chapel Hill
The Renderers are a New Zealand band who originally formed in the very late
80s & who got a little bit of international attention (including a lovely
single on Merge) but ultimately never became quite the indie-rock household
name as their peers the Bats or the 3Ds or the Clean.
Nevertheless they've been soldiering on, highly intermittently, and in fact
have a brand new album out on Ba-Da-Bing. And here they are in Chapel Hill
on a Tuesday night.
Tuesday, October 4
Double Negative (http://www.myspace.com/thedoublenegative)
Whatever Brains (http://whateverbrains.bandcamp.com/)
The Union, Raleigh
The Union is in the Warehouse District in Raleigh -- it first hit many
people's radar when it was added as a venue for Hopscotch '11, and now it
looks like they may be doing a semi-regular Tuesday-night punkrock thing.
Double Negative & Whatever Brains, of course, are two of the most exciting
live bands in the Triangle, and are well worth a trip out, regardless of
which night of the week they're playing.
Tuesday, October 4
Horseback (http://www.myspace.com/horsebacknoise)
Atlas Moth (http://www.myspace.com/theatlasmothband)
Ken Mode
Nightlight, Chapel Hill
Horseback have played quite a few shows over the past 9-12 months with more
or less the same lineup, which used to be a fairly rare thing for Jenks. I
managed to miss them at Hopscotch, but there's a live recording circulating
that's just face-melting, particularly the set-closing cover of the Stooges'
"TV Eye." See this band while you can.
Tuesday, October 4
Claude Bourbon (http://www.claudebourbon.org/)
The Casbah, Durham
Wednesday, October 5
tUnE-yArDs (http://tune-yards.com/)
Pat Jordache (http://www.myspace.com/mountainmanpatjordache)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro
The tUnE-yArDs show at Local 506 last year was pretty much the best thing I
saw all year. Merrill Garbus's songs worm their way into my brain like few
others have the power to do, but the real killer was how she & Nate
recreated their dense polyrhythmic layers via nothing much more than a
couple of drums, a bass, a ukelele & some amazing application of loop pedal
technology.
Wednesday, October 5
A Hawk and a Hacksaw
Dark Dark Dark (http://brightbrightbright.com/)
Pillars and Tongues
The Pinhook, Durham
This show is being co-presented with Duke Performances, who have really
stepped up their interactions with the local club scene this season. LOVE
it.
Wednesday, October 5
Animal Alphabet
Gem Club (http://www.iamgemclub.com/)
Holy Spirits (http://holyspirits.bandcamp.com/)

Thursday, October 6

Friday, October 7

Inspector 22
Birds & Arrows (http://www.myspace.com/birdsandarrows)
Free Electric State (http://www.myspace.com/freeelectricstate)
Organos
Motorco Music Hall, Durham
This is the opening party for Minus Sound Research 6, aka the sixth annual
art exhibition put together by Maria Albani & John Harrison, featuring
visual art made by folks who are maybe better-known locally as musicians.
Friday, October 7

Patrick Sweany (http://www.patricksweany.com/)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro
Friday, October 7
Wigg Report (http://www.reverbnation.com/thewiggreport)
Hamell on Trial (http://www.myspace.com/hamellsramble)
The Pinhook, Durham
I'm still not clear on the exact definition of "antifolk" but if that's what
the Wigg Report play, then I'm a fan. And they're huge fans, in turn, of
Hamell on Trial, so transitively speaking . . .
Friday, October 7
Brainbows (http://brainbows.bandcamp.com/)
Useless Eaters (http://www.myspace.com/uselesseatersmemphis)
Lame Drivers (http://lamedrivers.com/)
The Polyps (http://freemusicarchive.org/music/the_polyps)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill
This is a Layabout Presents show, so you know you're in for a fuzzed-out
garage-pop/rockin' good time. Hey, did you hear that Brainbows have already
released a *second* EP? Yep <http://brainbows.bandcamp.com/>.
Friday, October 7
Malamondos (http://www.malamondos.com/)
Killer Filler (http://www.myspace.com/killerfiller)
The Cave, Chapel Hill
Friday, October 7
Leadfoot (http://www.leadfoot.net/)

Minor Stars (http://www.myspace.com/minorstars)
DIVEbar, Raleigh
Saturday, October 8
Steve Howell & The Lonesome Teardrops
Jeanne Jolly
Southland Ballroom, Raleigh
When the Backsliders split up, each of the two primary songwriters went off
in his own direction. Steve Howell was always the one with the deeper
honky-tonk roots, and that has been borne out in his post-Backsliders
projects.
Saturday, October 8
Akris (http://www.myspace.com/akrisband)
Unholy Tongues (http://www.myspace.com/unholytongues)
Derek Poteat

http://www.reverbnation.com/iwastotallydestroyingit)

This is the first in a series of autumn IWTDI shows in which they'll play
each of their albums in its entirety. Which means they'll be playing their
first record tonight.
Saturday, October 8
