 8P Open Mic Night
Open Mic is arranged to enable anyone to perform, so all you have to
do is turn up early and get your name down to perform. Originals and
cover music of every style and genre are welcome! Open mic is a great
way to practice your art and can also can be a proving ground for new
talent and material. The audience consists of singers, poets,
songwriters and music lovers so the atmosphere should be warm and
encouraging for everybody.

Thursday, August 11
 8:30P Johnny Swank (blues/americana)
Johnny Swank was born in the big city of Climax, NC in a house filled
with Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, and gospel. His influences range from
early blues, rockabilly, country, rock, and alternative stuff
(whatever the hell that is)

He plays a variety of instruments, including the World Famous*
Fritocaster 3-String-Ass-Kicking-Machine, homemade cigar box guitars,
and acoustic 6-string.

 10P New Hope Creek
If one were to mix the banjo, with vocal harmonies, western swing and
edgy songwriting with a couple of Irish fiddle tunes what would they
have? Answer: Frankenstein and his bride doing a jig on their
honeymoon. No, the Triangle area bluegrass/folk band, New Hope
Creek.

Used to playing for a guitar case full of ones, the band, New Hope
Creek has also been paid in lettuce, burritos, goats milk soap,
compliments and blackberry jam. Its going to be a nightmare for us
when tax season gets here, says front man, David King. There simply
arent enough categories on the 1040 D.

And while band members are trying to find new categories on tax forms,
several band members have been seen stealing away doing lines of
Rogaine before the shows. Guitarist, Joff Coe is admittedly one of the
original cavemen.

I helped to build that place, he said talking about one of Chapel
Hills oldest music venues, The Cave on E. Franklin St. where the
band has an upcoming show.

Several band members met last year at Joffs New Years Eve party. I
was going to Joffs party to recruit musicians, King said. I had
fiddle, piano and guitar player, David McKnight on board when I ran
into banjo and guitar player, George Michaels who told me he was going
to retire in two weeks and didnt know what he was going to do with
himself. I told him I had a plan.

McKnight, who once ran for the US Senate, hiked from Manteo to Murphy
to promote his campaign and feels that if he had kept on walking he
would have ended up in Nashville playing music instead of fiddlin
around in North Carolina.

King also met Irish fiddle tune player, Eileen Regan at the same party
and invited her to join.

Joe Liles, the bands unofficial trainer and sign painter, hiked the
Appalachian Trail after retirement several years ago. Joe plays
harmonica, sings and writes songs for the band. Hugh Crisswell, also
recently retired, is the only mandolin player that we know of who can
play upside down, and still maintain daylight hours. In The Cave
Hugh is often mistaken as a bat.

Fortunately, with the bands high flying antics, picking and double-
stops, there is one person to ground them all in one fine thread and
that is the bands stand-up bass player, Marc Alperin.

Marc keeps us all in line, says King. He is the rhythm police and
the heart beat of New Hope Creek. Without Marc, we are dead.

Friday, August 12
 8:30P James Olin Oden
James Olin Oden is a singer/songwriter of Celtic Music local to the
area. Having played in several Celtic bands over the years he has
developed a compelling rhythmic style and delivery that pulls you into
the music taking you to the views and vistas of Ireland and Scotland.

Throughout a performance, James goes from drinking songs to heart
rending ballads to foot stomping jigs and reels giving audiences a
full experience of what Celtic music can offer.

10P Near Blind James and Harmonica Bob
Near-Blind James (James Shoe) and Harmonica Bob (Robert Waldrop) have
been playing blues together for over 30 years. Originally from
Greenville, NC, they play a variety of blues styles but focus on
Piedmont and Ragtime styles, much of which originated in this area.
Piedmont blues were strongest in the 1930s and 1940s, prior to the
amplified sound commonly played now. Many of the artists they have
studied, lived and played in and around Durham. These include Blind
Boy Fuller, Sonnie Terry & Brownie McGhee and The Reverend Gary Davis.
They also throw in a dose of Hokum, Rockabily, Atlanta Blues, Gospel
(not quite what you might be used to), Delta Blues and whatever else
makes them happy. James has been playing metal-bodied dobro and guitar
in the fingerpicked style used in Piedmont blues since he was 12 and
helped Bob to get hooked on Blues music in the late 70s. Bob plays
harmonica and both sing, often on-key and in occasionally in harmony.
NBJ and HCA Bob have performed at most every sort of club, venue,
street fair or gathering that calls for music in various acoustic and
electric formats including: 5 Guys Named Moe, The Cavemen, The
Phantoms, The Jive Bombers, Cool Papa Bel and The Soul Duprees, James
Get On The Good Foot Shoe and His Progressivaires, and have shared the
stage with The Right Reverend Billy Wirtz, Bo Diddely, Big Boy Henry
and John D Holeman to mention a few. The only jobs we havent played
are a Bar or Bat Mitzvah and were looking for that one now if
anyones interested . They play what they mean and mean what they
play. Sure to please.

Saturday, August 13
 8:30P Martha's Trouble (folk/folk pop/americana)
Five years ago, Martha's Trouble, an Americana folk/pop duo, released
a nationally, critically acclaimed album, Forget October. Since, the
duo has all but been quiet, touring the country, writing and
recording, preparing for the next leg of their epic adventure. On Feb.
1, 2011, Marthas Trouble will release the much-anticipated Anchor
Tattoo the duo's tenth self-released album.

The past five years have been crucial for the duo. In addition to
sustaining a career in music, Jen and Rob Slocumb started a family and
are raising their two children Wilson, 5, and Emery, 3. The time
between albums allowed the couple to focus on their family and
spirituality, both setting the tone for their release of Anchor
Tattoo.

The new album, Anchor Tattoo takes the duo back to their roots,
bringing back their signature sound an Americana/folk album with pop
essence that made them touch so many when they first came to the
music scene 12 years ago.

I think we went through a discovery process trying different things
over the years and landed on what I would say our strength is, Jen
said. But it took some trying. I think thats good though. You try
different things and you come to a place where you belong, where you
fit. Thats what we did. And now we are stronger than ever.

Our fans can expect a very fresh, honest, uplifting album. It's very
true to ourselves, Jen said. It's who we are. We are not trying to
be like any other band or trying to be like the next trend in music. I
think our fans who like us 'live' as a duo or trio, will like this
record. It is still a fully produced record, but it's not overdone. We
were able to spend a lot of time with it and it is our most
thoughtful, mature record to date.

 10P The SnoCones (roots music/blues/rock)
Art Champagne is a self-taught rock n roller and bluesman originally
from Connecticut. While in college he decided that he wanted to be
Keith Richards when he grew up. Despite his best efforts he became a
physics professor. He also performs with Mark Cool and the Folk Stars
(myspace.com/markcool1) . Nancy Bierman studied classical piano and
sang in school choirs as a kid in New York. She honed her vocal skills
in the kitchen while preparing dinner and in stores, singing along
with the muzac. She also performs with Brian and Mary Lewis
(brianandmarylewis.com). Art and Nancy have been loving the NC music
scene since moving there in 1990. A North Carolina native, Penne
Sandbeck finds fulfillment in balancing a busy life--a day job as an
architectural historian, a full-time job as a mother--and, in the
process, becoming a better writer and musician.

Sunday, August 14
7:30 Sunday Night Jazz Series featuring The JazzTones
The JazzTones sextet plays mainstream jazz in the styles of the 50's
and 60's. Behind the sultry vocals of Alice Brower, the Jazztones
cover tunes ranging from standards, to swing, blues, latin and bebop.
It's members come from the greater Hillsborough, North Carolina area.
