According to the Pinhook, Aardvark & Z-Pocket are somehow connected to
Daniel Michalek of Bombadil.

Fan Modine (http://www.grimsey.com/fanmodine.html)
Aminal (http://www.myspace.com/theaminalmusic)
Wages (http://www.myspace.co/wageswages)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

"Gratitude for the Shipper," the first new Fan Modine album in a
half-dozen years, is a breezy gorgeous slice of post-MagFields pop

Think Big (http://www.facebook.com/Thinkbigpa)
Motorco Music Hall, Durham

Thursday, July 28
Bicameral Mind (http://www.myspace.com/bicamind)
Andrew Weathers
Khristian Weeks
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Following in footsteps of other notable local avant-gardists Bob
Boster (Mr. Merides) & Chuck Johnson (Spatula, Ivanovich, Pykrete,
etc), Andrew Weathers is about to head off to the West Coast to attend
Mills College. This is either his last, or one of his last, local
show[s], so catch him while you can.

Thursday, July 28
Lilac Shadows
Tir Na Nog, Raleigh

Thursday, July 28
New Town Drunks (http://www.newtowndrunks.com/)
Phatlynx
Kings, Raleigh

Chapel Hill's New Town Drunks have a brand-new live album out.
Phatlynx are still the world's only hefty Link Wray cover band.

Friday, July 29
The Rosebuds (http://www.therosebuds.com/)
Bon Iver (http://www.myspace.com/boniver)
Raleigh Amphitheater, Raleigh

I'm assuming everyone has already heard about these bands & this show.
One tidbit you might've missed in all the coverage is this: "The
touring band will consist of regular Bon Iver contributors Sean Carey
(drums, piano), Mike Noyce (guitar) and Matt McCaughan (drums), Rob
Moose on violin and guitar (Antony and the Johnsons, The National),
Mike Lewis on bass (Andrew Bird, Happy Apple), and a horn section
including Reginald Pace, Colin Stetson (Tom Waits, Arcade Fire), and
C.J. Camerieri (Rufus Wainwright, Sufjan Stevens)."

Friday, July 29
Bats and Mice (http://www.batsandmice.com/)
Maple Stave (http://www.maplestave.com)
Auxes (http://www.myspace.com/auxes)
Swordmasters of Ginaz
(http://www.facebook.com/pages/SWORDMASTERS-OF-GINAZ-aka-BATTLESTAR-CACKALACTICA/250835974932886)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

First local Maple Stave show since Andy Hull moved to DC. So I guess
it sort of makes sense that it's with Bats & Mice, a Lovitt band who
are also split between here & there.

Friday, July 29
Janzig (http://www.facebook.com/janzigxo)
Cher Horowitz
(http://www.facebook.com/pages/Cher-Horowitz-SF/151917344861639)
DJ Queen Plz
Earth Balance
The Pinhook, Durham

In addition to Midtown Dickens side-project Earth Balance *and* the
all-woman Danzig cover project Janzig, there will also be fire
spinning. I avoid any/all venues that feature open flames, but someone
let me know how that turns out.

Friday, July 29
The Moaners (http://www.themoaners.com/)
The All-Girl Boys Choir (http://www.facebook.com/theallgirlboyschoir)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Friday, July 29
Gross Ghost (http://www.myspace.com/grossghost)
Ed Schrader (http://www.myspace.com/edwardhenryschraderiii)

This is a post-Bon Iver show featuring three DiggUp Tapes artists,
including the mighty low-fi pop masters Gross Ghost.

John Wesley Satterfield
A Fragile Tomorrow
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh

Friday, July 29

Onward Soldiers (http://www.myspace.com/onwardsoldiers)
Effingham
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Saturday, July 30
The Wusses (http://thewusses.com/)
Trotter Building, Durham

This is actually a full-blown undersea-themed semi-formal dance &
family-night fundraiser for the Scrap Exchange. You can get more info
here: http://www.scrapexchange.org/news.html#gogo -- highlights
include "a free Make-n-Take area of Scrap Exchange materials, an
ocean-themed photo booth, a food truck rodeo, beer, games and
outrageous costumes."

Kids activities run from 6:30 - 9:00 p.m. & then the Wusses take the
stage at 10:00 p.m.

Saturday, July 30
S.C.O.T.S. (http://www.scots.com/)
The Moaners (http://www.themoaners.com/)
Berkeley Cafe, Raleigh

Southern Culture on the Skids are well-nigh-unstoppable, which is a
very good thing if you (a) like chicken & biscuits with your twang, or
(b) believe that musicians should be able to make a living at their
art even after they've definitively crossed that great chasm into
middle age. They're good people making silly but endearing music (and
Rick Miller is still a streak of lightning on the guitar).

Saturday, July 30
Soft Company (http://www.myspace.com/softcompany)
How I Became the Bomb
The Casbah, Durham

Soft Company are the side-project/brainchild of Missy Thangs, probably
slightly better known, to some anyway, as the keyboardist of the Love
Language. Or at least she was for the first howevermany iterations of
the band.

Saturday, July 30
David Dondero (http://www.futurefarmer.com/davidd.html)
Jolie Holland (http://www.jolieholland.com/)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

The Royal Nites
The Oak City Six (http://www.myspace.com/oakcitysix)
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh

Sunday, July 31
Country Mice (http://www.myspace.com/wearecountrymice)
The Pinhook, Durham

Sunday, July 31
Nik Freitas (http://www.nikfreitas.com/)
Avi Buffalo (http://avibuffalomusic.com/)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Sunday, July 31
The Loners (http://www.demonbeachrecords.com/loners.html)
Soundsystem 13
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh

The Loners are a gtr/drums duo, which might put you in mind of
garage-rock or rockabilly. But honestly they're more like a hardrock
band -- they lean hard into the turns & don't let up until everyone
else has pulled up lame & limped away.

Tuesday, August 2
Whatever Brains (http://whateverbrains.bandcamp.com/)
Mutant League (http://www.myspace.com/mutantleague)
Young Volcanos
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh

Finally, a show worth leaving the house on a Tuesday night for.
Whatever Brains have been one of the most confounding, original &
contrarian "punkrock" bands in town for ages now, and their debut
full-length just cemented that rep with left-turn after left-turn.

Wednesday, August 3
The Bamfs (http://www.facebook.com/thebamfs)
We Still Dream (http://www.myspace.com/westilldream)

The Pinhook, Durham

Garage-rock from folks who've been studying it for a generation or two.

Thursday, August 4
Inspector 22
Birds & Arrows (http://www.myspace.com/birdsandarrows)

I once saw Inspector 22 play a show that involved taking a nap on a
cot at Schoolkids Records.
