We are excited to announce more festivities around our *8 Year Anniversary
Weekend* at the Nightlight! We have Brand New Life coming back on *Friday,
March 25th*. On *Saturday, March 26th* we have a day-time fashion craft
market with folks from Roulette, Reciprocities and Cuke & Sew! and, then we
are PSYCHED to announce that SPIDER BAGS will be headlining this year's 8
year throw-down with DJ Family Vacation (Ethan Clauset), Pigeons and
D.Charles Speer..

Thanks everyone for supporting the Nightlight!
Here is our upcoming calendar and descriptions of shows!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

*Wed 02/16 Sparta Philharmonic <http://www.myspace.com/spartaphilharmonic> /
FEKETE <http://www.boatburning.com/>-STEVENS
<http://bstevens.bandcamp.com/>is the collaboration of guitarists
ANDRAS FEKETE (Boat Burning) and BRUCE
STEVENS / Lobo Marino
<http://www.myspace.com/keepyourheaduplobomarino>(Richmond, VA) /
Gentle
Robot <http://www.myspace.com/thegentlerobot> :: 9:30 PM :: $6 *

Hooky, guitar-charging Jersey-Philly indie/post-punk duo Sparta Philharmonic
mix up their sound with enough fuzz wash to remind me of some 90s gazers.
Richmond's Lobo Marino's quirky folk melds field recordings with boy-girl
vocal harmonies and perfectly shaken guitar lines. Soothing
jazz/folk-inflected Chapel Hill newcomers Gentle Robot and the collaboration
of Adras Fekete and Bruce Stevens round the bill.

*Thurs 02/17 THANK YOU <http://www.myspace.com/wethankyou> (Thrill
Jockey<http://www.thrilljockey.com/>Label) / Mutx (new project by
Julion and Kenny) / Fan
Modine <http://www.myspace.com/fanmodine> :: 9:30 PM :: $5 *

"Launched in 2006 with original drummer Elke Wardlaw (who now resides in
Berlin), Thank You carved out a new sound drawing inspiration from the
innovative post-punk of This Heat and Swell Maps and the polyrhythmic attack
of The Ex and Dog Faced Hermans. Their live shows have become the stuff of
(living) legend, a tension-and-release pile-on that drops jaws and leaves
organs vibrating; their recordings, crafted with collaborators such as J.
Robbins (Jawbox, Yeasayer, Ponytail, and Mary Timony) and Chris Coady (Yeah
Yeah Yeahs, Beach House, Gang Gang Dance, TV on the Radio), all vital
documents of the recent future as performed by six arms and three sets of
teeth." (www.thrilljockey.com) New stuff from Kenny and Julion (Electric
Cactus) and local odd-prog popper Fan Modine (imagine Cary Mercer channeling
Pere Ubu) open.

*Fri 02/18 Spaghetti
Western<http://www.myspace.com/theleonardcohencoverband>/ Primal
Static <http://www.primalstatic.com/> (NYC) / Joe Norkus (Embarrassing
Fruits)- 10 PM :: $5*

John Neville steps from behind the Embarrassing Fruits kit to helm the
haze-folk dirges of Spaghetti Western. Electro-blues duo Primal Static make
the trip down from NYC to open. Songwriter for all seasons, Embarrassing
Fruits frontman Joe Norkus has four-tracked discs and discs of songs that
don't exactly fit into the Fruits sound-- tonight we'll hopefully hear some
never-before-heard tunes.

*Sat 02/19 Paradise of Bachelors
<http://www.paradiseofbachelors.com/>TOBACCO-A-GO-GO Dance Party!! ::
10 PM :: FREE
*

Paradise of Bachelors cordially invites you, the listening and dancing
public, to join us at a February 19th dance party to celebrate the
repressing of *Said I Had a Vision: Songs & Labels of David Lee, 1960-1988*,
the label’s inaugural release, once again available in a second edition of
500 beautiful and heavily annotated vinyl LPs, fresh from the pressing
plant.

*Sun 02/20 MattaGawa <http://www.myspace.com/mattagawa> ( free jazz show ) /
Rumpelstiltskin (trio by Grove, Stu Coles & Randy Pelosi) :: 9 PM:: $5 *

Washington, D.C.'s Matta Gawa's self-described “cinematic chunks of
post-hardcore improvised sound" is, however else you might describe it,
standing apart from the main body of whack jazz. Sounds created from more
than forty guitar pedals creating loops, sample, octave altering, various
synthesized noise effects created and layered all at once and rounded out by
some mad drumming create a dark, dense sonic explosion that confronts your
ears. Yes, that's what I'm talking about: good, wholesome fresh strange and
freaky sounds. All of this unhinged stuff can be found on Matta Gawa's
maiden release,bA, out last week courtesy of Engine Studios.

Matta Gawa makes big noise, but it's coming from only a couple of guys:
Edward Ricart on guitar and Sam Lohman on drums.

We're serious about green and local beer... that's why we're hosting Chapel
Hill's first-ever "Save the Ales" party at the Nightlight on Saturday,
February 26th. We're raising awareness about how to stop global warming, a
major threat to global agriculture, including those oh-so-important hops, a
critical ingredient in beer! "Save the Ales" is part of the recruitment
drive to get 100 UNC students registered for Power Shift 2011, the largest
convergence of students advocating for environmental justice in the country.
This year's conference will be held April 15-18 in Washington, D.C. at the
Walter E. Washington Convention Center.

Come get fired up for Power Shift 2011 & "Save the Ales"!

>From the Thrill Jockey website:

Van, Lain, and Jennings Carney share a mom, a dad, and a Virginia farm house
studio. They record themselves, book themselves, hold complex day jobs, and
know their way around a working farm as well as an instrument. They like it
loud and for Living, their fifth release in two years, they like it dirty.
Their fifth album (including Sea Voids the LP only tour record made for
their tour with White Hills) was recorded on an old reel to reel in the
band's home studio using two track tape. Unlike Sea Voids which was recorded
in eight brief evening sessions and Maker which was recorded in mostly
single takes, this album underwent a lengthy recording process over the
course of four months. Just enough time for Isaiah Mitchell of Earthless to
drop by and lay down some guitar. Living is connected to their previous
recordings by the brothers' affection for a thick as molasses guitar sound
and a heavy bass that holds sway over the album, creating some delicious
sludge.

Formed by Dave W. on guitar and Ego Sensation on bass, White Hills are an
ever changing entity and always striving to push the envelope. "Heads On
Fire", out of print on vinyl and CD, was Thrill Jockey's first White Hills
release in partnership with London's Rocket Recordings. The album winds
through a sonic maze a la Hawkwind, with a nod to the more gritty fuzzed out
playing of Mudhoney. The out of print "Dead" EP that followed, explored more
drone heavy territory and textured soundscapes. "White Hills" finds the band
at a break through point musically. It is still heavy and would certainly be
labeled "Space Rock" but it finds the band employing a more open and free
flowing style of playing.
