Thursday, January 6
=95 8P Jason Ager (acoustic/blues/rock)
Jason Ager is a blues-rock artist with hip-hop and R&B influences.
Jason=92s self-taught guitar style is distinguished by stylized palm
muting and percussive striking. He has been playing original music
since picking up the guitar, and has grown a loyal following in his
hometown Philadelphia music scene. With moves to Washington, D.C. and
now Baltimore, Jason is a staple in clubs from New York to Virginia.
He leads a trio that moves audiences to the dance floor, and also
performs upbeat acoustic music that tests the boundaries of the
traditional singer-songwriter.
Jason sings of love, loss, and youthful misadventures on his debut CD
Lunchdate, out on March 5, 2010. High-energy guitar riffs and a
driving rhythm section get the feet moving, and the rapid-fire lyrics
of a veteran emcee draw smiles as they inscribe pop culture references
and inventive rhymes. The album=92s 12 tracks capture the variety of
Jason=92s influences, from Marvin Gaye to Taj Mahal, G. Love to Ben
Harper. His signature sound is evident from track one, as =93Jocelyn=94
demonstrates the syncopated vocal style Jason has cultivated, and
=93Sing-Along Jawn=94 pairs a memorable hook with stuttered consonants a
la George Thorogood. He even goes a little bit country on standout
single =93Strawberry Wine.=94

=95 10P Triple Fret (rock/world/blues) featuring Scott Sawyer
Mike Babyak began playing guitar in his early teens while growing up
in the Allentown, Pa area. In the mid-70s, Mike enjoyed success with
his first serious project, Gateway, a 5-piece band that covered bands
such as Steely Dan and Yes.
He went on to study classical guitar at Muhlenberg College, winning
several local performance competitions. He spent the next 11 years
performing as a classical soloist and guest artist with small chamber
and early music ensembles.
In the mid-90s, his interests turned back again to the electric
guitar. Also at this time he began to study the lap steel more
seriously.
Early in 2001, he founded the Triple Fret project, an improvisational
blues, jazz, and world act with a rotating cast of musicians.
Mike cites his long time teacher and friend, Steve Kimock, as his most
important and enduring musical influence. He also has studied with
Durham jazz guitarist, Scott Sawyer (who will be joining this show).
His influences are wide-ranging and include V.M. Bhatt, David Lindley,
R. Prasanna, Diblo Dibala, and Ry Cooder.

Friday, January 7
=95 8P Justin Johnson (blues/jazz/soul)
Justin Johnson has been playing guitar professionally for over seven
years, performing over 2000 gigs, and covering multiple genres,
including Blues, Jazz, Reggae, Bluegrass, Rock, Folk and Country. He
has performed in many settings, such as big band Jazz ensembles, three-
piece Blues-Rock bands, Jam bands, Country bands, Bluegrass duos and
trios, Jazz combos, as well as Soul and Reggae groups. In these
groups, Justin has been billed alongside many great musicians, like
The Allman Brothers, Tim Reynolds, Widespread Panic, Victor Wooten,
Matisyahu, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Culture, The Nappy Roots, Corey
Smith, Moe, and Jeff Coffin.
His participation in multiple groups has also given Justin extensive
experience in the studio, and familiarized him with the recording and
production process. While studying at The University of North Carolina
at Wilmington, Justin earned a minor in Jazz performance. He also won
first place in the =93Slidestock 2006=94 National Slide Guitar Competition
in Wilmington, North Carolina.
Solo Performances...
In addition to playing in duos and larger ensembles, Justin also
performs solo instrumental guitar music. Drawing from his experience
in multiple genres, he combines Jazz, Blues and Soul with elements of
Bluegrass and Country to create a sound that is very unique, while
remaining familiar. By using digital looping processors, he simulates
the effect of several guitar players playing simultaneously. This
expands the sound that you would normally get from a single guitar
player, and sounds more like a duo or trio than a solo performer. He
also combines fingerstyle techniques with flatpicking, slide guitar,
and different digital effects to keep his sound diverse and
interesting.

=95 10P Uniontown (rock/roots/swamp pop)
Uniontown is a roots-rock swamp anthem power pop trio dwelling in that
backwoods neighborhood not too far from where you live. You know the
place: a sprawling, organic compound overgrown with toetappin rhythms
and a few twists and turns down the crushed gravel path to keep it all
interesting. Uniontown loves the old school influences of the past,
but kicks it into the millennium with a truckload of never say die
grit and the delicate roar of a finely tuned chainsaw. Chris Long
sings and drives a relentless guitar, Fred Royal sings and pounds on
drums and Eddie Holm won't leave that five string bass alone. We aint
afraid to play anything we can think of, 'cause it's all good. Come
stay for a spell in Uniontown.

Saturday, January 8
=95 8P Sinful Savage Tigers w/ Andrew Marlin (from Mandolin Orange)
What started as a one off gig at a folk festival in Alabama in the
Fall of '08, blossomed into a full-blown recording project for friends
Rob Guthrie and Seth Martin. Together, Guthrie and Martin reimagined
and rearranged their respective backlog of songs to forge something
new.

Calling on the help of multi-instrumentalist Joshua Clell Langford,
the newly-minted Sinful Savage Tigers recorded their first album Rain
is the Soup of the Dogs in Heaven over the course of three days in
late December of 2008. The nine song debut pulled together influences
ranging from Graham Parsons to James Mathus, from the Kinks to AM
country, from Gillian Welch to Guided By Voices.

=95 10P The Brothership (funk/r&b/soul)
In June of 1972 four young siblings (the Brodie Brothers) set out to
make music and never looked back. Despite the ups and downs that come
along with this business of music this group of brothers who later
became The Brothership, continues to bring audiences all over the
absolute best in rhythm and blues, carolina beach music and funk of
the eighties. This group of dedicated funk master have out lasted many
similar acts of its kind on both the regional and national scene.
Inspired greatly by Motown=92s Jackson Five these brothers also have
earlier roots in gospel music. Growing up in a home that played host
to friday evening rehearsals for the siblings=92 mother=92s own gospel
group, music simply became a way of life for these youngsters on into
adulthood. Other earlier influences include the Beatles, James Brown,
Marvin Gaye, Temptations and the entire Motown family. In the late
70's and early 80's the band began to experience a difference level of
success as the national concert scene would offer opening
opportunities for the group with such notable acts as The Barkays,
Patrice Rushan, and The Junzo Crew. There was a brief stint in which
the brothers traveled with Sanford and Son's Lawanda Page along with
Sophisticated Comedy star Wildman Steve on the "Watch it Sucker
Review" starring Aunt Ester. Classic crowd involvement is the focal
point of this well oiled entertainment extravaganza maticulously
crafted from years of dedication to this thing called show business.
Meet the band...
As production manager bass guitarist and vocalist Robert Brodie, a
dominant factor sings much of the bands power tunes. From Brick House
to Brown Eyed Girl audiences all over continue to be dazzled by the
energy of this dynamic performer after all these years. Robert also
appears in the 1992 February issue of Penthouse Magazine along with
brother Sidney in an earlier music venture the brothers shared with
the late Doug Clark of the Hot Nuts. Being on stage is Robert's first
love however this profession requires one to wear many hats. Like most
entertainers, Robert has a special love for travel. Although The
Brothership keeps a bus driver on the payroll, for Robert a road trip
is not as fullfilling if he can't feel the sensation of that over size
steering wheel passing through his fingers.
Band leader Sidney Brodie shares the frontline in sort of a tag team
style with brother Robert. Whether courting a chartbusting rhythm and
blues joint or Amos Lee=92s =93Sweet Pea=94 Sidney attaches his special
brand of vocal artistry with his classy high powered delivery. To his
credit Sidney has also appeared in =93A Singing Stream =93a black family
chronicle of a black family in gospel music in the rural south. This
movie continues to be shown around the world and is widely available
in libraries. TV interviews on cable show "Playboy 360" along with
being the first choice for the band scene by producers of "Everybody's
All American" Starring Dennis Quaid was the highlight of Sidney's Hot
Nuts career in the 1980's however, details of debauchery and his
infamous association with regional entertainment rivals is highlighted
in an autobiography slated for release in late 2011.
Leonard "Len" Brodie vocalist, drummer, percussionist. His list of
talents could run on and on into the next frame. Len of course is one
of the original founding members of the family group from the 1970's.
Residing in Wilson NC. Len enjoys making music and introducing others
to the gift of music. Len owns and extensive library collection of
music from many lifetimes and generes. Now on the front line as a
vocalist and percussionist Len is actually the original drummer for
the group and performed on the group's recordings of "Tell me" and
"Rock Shocking love affair" of the 1980's which experience regional
success. Len sings much of the classic stuff with the band. To his
credits Len also makes an appearance in the black family chronicle "A
Singing Stream" during a five year stint as drummer with gospel
singing group The Golden Echoes.

Breeze Brodie now 23 is the son of Bandleader Sidney Brodie. Breeze
played his first full 4 hour gig in Charleston South Carolina at age
12. This was a triple nighter on location. A drumming sensation with
extensive stage and road experience, this youngman also has begun
teaching other aspiring musicians the craft which he credits to
helping carve out an upstanding life style. He also credits the
drumming experience with keeping him on the straight and narrow.
Words do little justice in describing this outstanding personality
innovative timekeeping machine. You simply must witness this drumming
sensation for yourself. Breeze is extremely knowledgable of his craft
as well as his craftmen's tools. Breeze has studied the orgin of the
drum and if queried will take you on a journey beyond your wildest
dream regarding the drum's original intent . Breeze recieved extensive
coaching on the kit from his uncle Len and to this very day still shed
and share technics.
Veteran trumpeter Marvin Wofford has been with The Brothership since
1996 when the band embarked on an inner city youth violence
intervention tour (concert series) during an onset of gang violence in
Durham NC. Over the next few years Marvin continued to work the
community concert series for several summer seasons to follow.
Enjoying the camaraderie and the overall good nature of the band
members Marvin began to free up his personal schedule and became more
and more available to play the numerous college and corporate shows
the band began to book. Not bad for a part-timer who initially just
wanted to help out the youth of Durham. Marvin now Brass Captain for
The Brothership=92 conducts as few as two piece brass and as many as 5
pieces of brass depending on the lineup purchased. Marvin is also a
drummer and background vocalist and a great dancer. So ladies don=92t
get too close to the stage this TBS Phunkster has been known to steal
a dance or two throughout the evening.
Adding to the royal mix of The Brothership, Charlie Johnson a sax
player hailing from Enterprise Mississippi played bass in a house band
as a young man for famed singing star Etta James before an exciting
career in the United States Airforce. Charlie=92s soulful application
of sax riffs with that classic Mississippi delta blues influence
continues to take The Brothership to new heights with each live
moment. After retiring from service Charlie needed to satisfy a
musical itch. This was an appetite that would be quenched by a band in
Durham North Carolina where Charlie decided to settle in for
retirement. Charlie was destined to meet The Brothership. Charlie
joined the band in 2002 immediately plugging in his many gifts to help
propel this entertainment phenomenon to the next level.

Big Bang Boom (band)
Big Bang Boom is a power pop trio that writes and performs parent-
friendly children=92s music. The live show is high-energy, and gets the
crowd involved. From getting the kids on stage for the =93Spongebob
Chorus=94 to the parents vs. kids hokey pokey challenge =96 there is no
sitting down!
What happens when professional musicians become parents? They play
and write children's music. This is the path taken by Big Bang Boom, a
children's music group from Greensboro. After 20 years touring clubs
and playing parties, Chuck Folds (younger brother of piano rocker Ben
Folds) and Steve Williard decided to expand their horizons and play
for kids. Together with drummer Eddie Walker they have become the
parent friendly kid's rock band alternative.
Big Bang Boom is designed to give parents something else to listen
to besides Disney music and the Wiggles. There is some good quality
children's music being recorded these days. You can catch it on any
kid-friendly TV station, and now you can hear it live too.
Big Bang Boom plays some children's favorites as well as their own
original songs for kids.

=95 7:30 Sunday Night Jazz Series
Fusion Collective (jazz/fusion/lounge)
Steeped in (but not limited to) a traditional jazz repertoire, Fusion
Collective South has featured several Triangle-based jazz musicians;
but similar to its northern parent (Fusion Collective =93North=94), it
maintains its core members. While inspired by the original Fusion
Collective, FCS has taken on an identity all its own. More recently,
FCS has featured more funk/fusion/contemporary tunes, with the
intention of having a more modern and vibrant sound.
FCS is fronted by sax-man Josh Mobley, a young =96gun who blazes through
solos with tenacity and ferocity, but also plays tenderly to the
various ballads FCS features in its repertoire. Josh features
primarily the alto sax, but also heavily features the tenor sax, as
well.
Guitarist Mike Miller comes to us via the swing-blues-soul-R&B band,
Mighty Lester. Mike has been a musician for more than 35 years.
Musical influences range from rock icons The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix
to jazz legends Wes Montgomery and Thelonious Monk. Of special
interest are experimental/avant garde/progressive musicians such as
Robert Fripp and Adrian Belew, John Zorn, Marc Ribot, and Bill
Frisell.
Founding member/bassist Sean Geist has been playing electric bass
nearly 30 years. He has studied (and/or attended master sessions/
clinics) with a who=92s who of bassists: Jerry Jemmott, Mike Frost,
Chuck Alder, Victor Wooten, Steve Bailey, Chuck Rainey, Matt Garrison,
Oteil Burbridge, and many others. He has also been featured in local
bands Mighty Lester, Retro Buzzkill, and the MPS Trio.
