=95 8P Miss Tess and the Bon Ton Parade (jazz/americana/blues)
Miss Tess is a New York City based songwriter and performing musician,
who tours regularly with her band, as "Miss Tess & The Bon Ton
Parade". In addition to Tess on her 1920s archtop guitar, the current
lineup includes Alec Spiegelman on sax & clarinet, Paul Dilley on
upright bass, and Matt Meyer on drums.

After nationally touring for the last five years, Miss Tess has just
released her anticipated fifth album, =93Darling, oh Darling=94. The album
presents an ecclectic array of originals, all stemming from roots in
jazz, swing, blues, and folk. Miss Tess draws comparisons to artists
such as Jolie Holland, Madeleine Peyroux, Regina Spektor, or Ella
Fitzgerald, but maintains a style all of her own.

"Outstanding Folk Artist of the Year"=96Boston Music Awards

=93The area=92s next musical sensation=94 =96Boston Magazine

=93Miss Tess takes old music and makes it sound fresh. She also makes
new music with a sense of history and context to it. No matter what
label you want to put on it, it=92s damn good music. Period.=94 =96Matt
Smith, Club Passim

=93If Billie Holiday and Chet Atkins had a musical baby, it would be
Miss Tess. With a calmness that belies the intensity in her music,
Miss Tess will cement a place in your music- loving heart with her
first note.=94 =96Caroline Aiken, Singer/songwriter

Friday, September 24 - $10 Cover

=95 8P Jim Avett (gospel/country/acoustic)
Jim Avett is a retired welder. He is not only a welder of course. He,
like any man, is more than his career, more than his working business.
He is a farmer. He is an ex-psychology professor. He is a husband of
forty years and a father of thirty-five. He draws. He cuts and bails
his own hay for his own cows. From 1967 to 1971, he served in the
United States Navy. He is a dedicated family man. He has worked with
neglected children and broken households as a social worker. He has
built bridges of steel and a home of lumber. Oh yes, he sings and
picks the guitar as well. For all of what he is, his music is a
glimpse into his sentiment and history; the son of a preacher and a
pianist, who as a boy, sat in the pews and heard not only his father=92s
sermons, but these songs as well. Now, he has sung them with the tape
rolling, as honest and rough-cut as it gets, and anyone may listen.

=95 9:30P Jon Shain Trio (blues/folk/acoustic)
Jon Shain is a veteran singer-songwriter who's been turning heads for
years with his words, his fiery acoustic guitar work, and his evolved
musical style - combining improvised piedmont blues with bluegrass,
swing, and ragtime. Shain=92s latest CD, Times Right Now, was self-
produced along with Jackson Hall and Scottsburg Jonze and mixed by
Chris Stamey. The album, released in November 2009, is already being
hailed as the best recording of Shain=92s career.

Jon grew up in Haverhill, Massachusetts, a Merrimack River mill-town
that had already seen its better days by the time he was a child in
the 1970s. His family=92s business was a small textile dyeing company,
and he worked in the factory during the summers throughout his teens.
At the same time, Shain began to discover his love of American roots
music and songwriting, specifically drawn to the narratives about
regular people and themes of social justice.

Shain headed south to North Carolina in 1986, to study American
History at Duke University and to continue his musical journey, as
well. In addition to studying with jazz professor Paul Jeffrey, he
also had the good fortune to learn the piedmont blues tradition
firsthand by playing in Big Boy Henry=91s backing band. It was at this
time that Shain also got to meet and play with John Dee Holeman and a
number of the great older NC blues players. Shain's classes in school
were heavily concentrated in southern history, English, and world
religions. That mixture of the academic environment and the real-world
blues music is what has most informed his musical direction.

Shain cut his touring teeth from 1989-1998 founding the Chapel Hill,
NC folk-rock group, Flyin' Mice and their spin-off group, WAKE. While
sharing stages with luminaries such as David Grisman, Tony Rice Unit,
Hot Tuna, Leon Russell, Dave Matthews Band, and the Dixie Dregs, the
band released four CDs and played clubs, schools, and festivals up and
down the East Coast, building a legion of fans.

After his band's breakup, Shain went solo, returning to his roots in
the folk and blues circuit. He released Brand New Lifetime in 1999 to
positive reviews and solid airplay in the US and abroad. Spring 2001
brought the release of Fools and Fine Ladies, which garnered reviews
from papers such as the Washington Post to national magazines like
Relix and No Depression. 2003 saw the release of Shain's acclaimed
album, No Tag, No Tail Light. The CD was produced in Boston, MA by
Dave Mattacks and Tom Dube, and marked a watershed in production
values, performance, and writing, winning great reviews in Sing Out!,
No Depression, Relix, The Boston Phoenix, and meriting a full page
article in Dirty Linen. The critically acclaimed follow-up, Home
Before Long, was also produced by Mattacks and Dube and released in
2005. The self-produced Army Jacket Winter followed in 2007.

In addition to festival slots and headlining club dates, the last few
years has seen Shain playing esteemed listening rooms such as The
Living Room in NYC, Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs, NY, and Godfrey
Daniels in Bethlehem, PA and opening sold out theatre shows for John
Hiatt, Keb=92 Mo=92, Little Feat, and others.

The Jon Shain Trio are Jon's musical partners-in-crime who appear
frequently on his live dates as well as on his recorded material.

F.J. Ventre - upright bass, vocals
F.J. Ventre and Jon began playing music together in 1982 when they met
in high school. F.J. went on to University of Massachusetts-Lowell,
earning a B.A. in Music Performance and Sound Recording. He remained
in the Boston area, performing in the city's vibrant music scene.
Since relocating to Chapel Hill, NC in 2000, Ventre has performed with
his own group The Swang Brothers, as well as The Stars Explode,
Rebecca and the Hi-Tones, and The Buzzkillz. In addition to performing
as a sought after sideman, he spends his time behind the mixing board,
engineering at his home studio and operating his graphic design firm
Tadpole Designs.

John Currie - dobro, guitar
The talented multi-instrumentalist John Currie has been playing with
Jon since 1997 when he joined WAKE as an electric lead player. As one
of the Triangle area's hottest and most in demand players, Currie is
at home playing everything from Bluegrass to Bebop. His solos often
bring hoots and hollers from the crowd.

Bill Newton - harmonicas, vocals
Bill Newton, known from his work with Rebecca and the Hi-Tones and his
own Duke Street Dawgs, is a master harmonica player. His album credits
include major label acts such as the Indigo Girls as well as just
about everyone in North Carolina. He is a veteran entertainer with an
engaging stage presence. Bill has been playing shows and recording
with Jon since 2001.

=95 8P Southern Trail Tour '10
Jeremy Aggers (folk rock/americana) from Atlanta, GA

Chelsea Lynn Labate (acoustic/folk/soul) from Asheville, NC
Chelsea Lynn LaBate was born under a mango tree in the South. She
spins tales of huffing volcanoes in Kenya, man- sized chinchillas,
small sea creatures with human crushes, pots and pans with watching
eyes and tributes to the greats before us - Galileo, Webster, Our
Founding Fathers as well as the many whose names go unknown.
She spent the past four years honing her song-writing skills on the
stages of New York City's Lower East Side and Brooklyn. Already well
known for her lush "song stories," she paints pictures with her words,
lyrically exploring human suffering, the seeds of courage, the
aftermath of disaster, pilgrimages and the often pain-causing patterns
of nature.
Her ghostly ballads, combine an intricate finger picking style with
a warbling voice that captivates and stuns. Inspired by the works of
Suzanne Vega, Billie Holiday, and Nick Drake, Chelsea Lynn has been
prolific in her writing, and has composed and recorded dozens of songs
since picking up the guitar in 2003.

Channing and Quinn (acoustic/indie/soul) from Nashville, TN
This is the story of Channing and Quinn...
It will be short because it's just begun, and they are anxiously
waiting to see what happens next.
It begins in the small town of Boone, perched precariously amidst
the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Channing, scribbling
lyrics and humming odd little melodies to herself, and Quinn, hungrily
learning to speak through any instrument he could find.
Inevitably, the two collided and as their music met, it sprang to
life like it had just been waiting for it's missing counterpart.
Channing and Quinn tested the waters in small venues first in Boone,
and then Charlotte, searching for a home for their quirky soulful
sound.
Their search lead them to Nashville, TN and its deep musical roots
ground them as they continue to travel and share the music that
they've drawn simply from themselves and the colorful world around
them."

Tyler Lyle (acoustic/folk/blues) from Atlanta, GA
At his core, Tyler Lyle is an old soul from his rural hometown of
Carrollton, Georgia.
His voice has the sultry candor of age, with lyrics that are both
original and boldly charming. Tyler's husky, impressive vocals have
already given way to three finished products: Some Songs EP, the
online only Bare EP, and most recently, Notes From The Parade. With
the use of a dizzying array of instruments -- trumpets, banjo,
flugelhorn, cymbals, glockenspiel, guitar, and harmonica -- Tyler's
latest release emerges as a soundtrack for life. As such, his bluesy
tracks suggest a slower, more earnest time. For an audience hungry for
more than just catchy lyrics, Tyler Lyle appeals as a genuine artist.
Tyler's strong sense of community plays a key part in his musical
integrity. He spent the bulk of 2008 abroad in Prague and in Paris
teaching English, an expedition that helped serve as an outlet for
self-discovery. And while Tyler has been roaming around for the past
year or two, he's also been busy at work on his craft. That's where
Notes From The Parade comes in, as a study in "motion." As one of the
album's more sentimental tracks ("Pinewood Chests") maintains, "Time
moves steady along / it's a similar tune for a different song." It's
his clever lyrics and distinct, striking voice that will stay with
listeners long after the song has ended.
Still, there's always a sense of humor about Tyler. His songs are
both parts smart and tangible. He doesn't take himself too seriously,
which is why listeners can continuously identify with Tyler's honest
nature. In "A Secret (About Secrets)," Tyler tackles the human spirit,
a weighty subject that he handles with care. He sings, "But I'm just a
blind man taking pictures in the dark, trying to open up my arms," and
continues, "and I'll put my pictures on the wall for you to see, but
you're blind like me." It's with his own brand of credible irony that
Tyler tells a story with each and every song. He escapes
predictability, though, instead touching upon familiar themes with
remarkably diverse lines.

=9510P Milagro Saints (americana/folk rock/rock)
SD Ineson (guitar, vocals), former member of English NYC-based band
The Jack Rubies, (who released two albums on TVT records, and toured
extensively in the U.S. with bands They Might Be Giants and Modern
English) and Lee Kirby (hammond organ, harmonica, piano) met by chance
encounter in NYC and soon found their various musical influences
harmonizing into a roots rock americana sound, influenced by Dylan,
Neil Young. Gene Clark. The Band, The Dead.Joyce Bowden, singer and
multi-instrumentalist,who had previously worked with members of
Talking Heads, The Ramones and Arthur Russell, was also a founding
member, and songwriter in the band.

A move out of NYC to Raleigh NC, found them submerged in the rootsy
celebrations of the local scene, releasing their eponymous CD on local
label, MoodFood (who released the original Whiskeytown debut) hitting
the local music top ten on radio.

Their 2nd CD "Midnight America" (2001) released on Moon Caravan
Records, won them a slot in the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival, Okemah
OK, sharing the finale stage with all the performers, led by Arlo
Guthrie in a mass version of "Goodnight Irene"

"Sunday" (2003) gained even more interest for the band including radio
play in Europe, became the theme song for WFIT's radio show 'Private
Radio' and garnered comparisons to Fairport Convention and Rusted
Root.

"Let It Rain" (2006) had the break-out track "Jack Kerouac" and the
band was invited to play in Lowell, Mass, (the authors's birthplace),
in July 2007
on the occasion of the 50th year anniversary of his masterpiece 'On
The Road', a show headlined by our musical heroes, 10,000 Maniacs.

Sunday, September 26 - Sunday Night Jazz Series

Market (Carrboro=92s outdoor live music venue), Hillsborough Jazz
Festival, Fayetteville Blues and Brews Festival, Tupelo=92s Steak House,
