Good lord. Between Sparkcon in Raleigh, the grand opening of the Casbah, and the seasonal re-opening of the Duke Coffeehouse, there's nearly as much to do *this* weekend as there was last weekend when Hopscotch was in full swing.

Thursday, September 16
Superchunk (http://www.superchunk.com)
Nasher Museum of Art, Durham

On the one hand, the lawn behind the Nasher is kind of a lousy place to see a band, since the ground slopes down away from the building, where the stage is set up. Sort of an inverse-amphitheater effect. On the other hand, that'll hopefully encourage people to stick close to the stage, which is by far the best vantage point to take in longtime Triangle indie-rock superstars Superchunk in their natural habitat.

Thursday, September 16
Bright Young Things
The Tomahawks (http://www.myspace.com/jeffcrawfordmusic)
The Small Ponds
Pour House, Raleigh

This is both a CD-release party for the Small Ponds (Caitlin Cary of Tres Chicas, plus Matt Douglas of the Proclivities), as well as part of the MusicSPARK aspect of Sparkcon.

I saw Bright Young Things for the first time at Hopscotch, and was really impressed by their 70s-vintage pub-pop, a la Harry Nilsson (or maybe a bit of Elton John).

Thursday, September 16
Joy in Red (http://www.facebook.com/joyinred)
Scarlet Virginia (http://www.reverbnation.com/scarletvirgini)
Broad Street Cafe, Durham

Thursday, September 16
The Breaks (http://www.reverbnation.com/thebreaksofpittsboro)
The Manics (http://www.myspace.com/themanicsrock)
Multiples
The Knockout Roses

This show is part of the MusicSPARK facet of the big Sparkcon multi-disciplinary arts & culture festival/convention happening in Raleigh this weekend.

Thursday, September 16
Inflowential (http://www.myspace.com/inflowential)
HaLo (http://mrbenready.tumblr.com)
Tir Na Nog, Raleigh

The first Local Bands, Local Beers of the post-Tamplin era.

Thursday, September 16
Last Year's Men (http://www.myspace.com/lastyearsmenband)
Iron Chic
James Joyce, Durham

The only band I saw twice at Hopscotch was Chapel Hill's Last Year's Men -- they were so phenomenal at Friday afternoon's Layabout Day Party that I went out of my way to catch them again on Saturday afternoon. Two guys fresh out of high school (and a third still in high school), some guitars, some classic garage-rock riffs, and a high-intensity delivery that you have to see to believe (conveniently, you can: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2RzIaeb10A ).

Thursday, September 16
NAPS
Lower Dens
Local 506, Chapel Hill

I saw Lower Dens in May in Baltimore, and while they were pleasant (in a kind of just-getting-started kind of way), they suffered by comparison with the other bands on the bill (Double Dagger & Future Islands, who would cause just about any other band to suffer by comparison). They're fronted by Jana Hunter, who previously released a couple of solo albums on Devendra Banhart's label.

Thursday, September 16

Battlestar Canada (http://www.myspace.com/battlestarcanada)

In addition to the two bands on the bill, this is also a screening of the documentary/concert film "Mogwai: Burning."

Thursday, September 16
Patrick Park (http://patrickpark.net/)
Sera Cahoone (http://www.seracahoone.com)

Fight the Big Bull (http://www.myspace.com/fightthebigbull)
Hayti Heritage Center, Durham

This collaboration between locals Megafaun & Virginia band Fight the Big Bull (as well as friends Justin Vernon & Sharon Van Etten) is an exploration of & tribute to Alan Lomax's Sounds of the South. It consists of three shows: Friday & Saturday nights at 8, and Sunday afternoon at 5.

Friday, September 17

Friday, September 17
The Midnight Gladness Band
Savage Knights (http://www.retroactivedynamics.com)
D-Town Brass
The Casbah, Durham

Brand-new local club the Casbah is jumping in to the local scene with both feet, featuring Durham's own large-and-brassy soul/jazz/funk revue D-Town Brass, as well as Raleigh jazz/skronk weirdos Savage Knights.

Friday, September 17
Midtown Dickens (http://www.myspace.com/midtowndickens)
Embarrassing Fruits (http://www.myspace.com/embarrassingfruitsband)
Lonnie Walker (http://www.myspace.com/lonniewalker)
Duke Coffeehouse, Durham

This is a CD release show for the new Embarrassing Fruits album; they're joined by two of the finest bands in the Triangle, Durham antifolk troublemakers Midtown Dickens, and crazed Dylan-meets-Pavement indierockers Lonnie Walker.

Friday, September 17

Local 506, Chapel Hill

Friday, September 17
Transportation (http://www.myspace.com/transportation)

Billy Bragg (http://billybragg.com/)
Darren Hanlon (http://www.darrenhanlon.com)

I saw Billy Bragg in 2008, in the leadup to the presidential election, and he was a wonderful mix of political firebrand & good-old-bloke.

Yet another MusicSPARK show, featuring some of the bright lights of North Carolina indie-rock, including UK-influenced wall-of-sounders Free Electric State, and the great Asheville nu-wave garage-rockers On the Take.

Saturday, September 18
The Tender Fruit (http://www.myspace.com/thetenderfruit)
Something Candid (http://www.reverbnation.com/sabinabarton)
Broad Street Cafe, Durham

The Tender Fruit (aka Raleigh songwriter Christy Smith) put out one of my favorite records of 2010, "Flotsam and Krill," which you can download here. http://drop.io/thetenderfruit

It'll be the best 8 bucks you'll spend this year.

Saturday, September 18
The Mercators (http://www.myspace.com/themercators)
Bustello (http://www.myspace.com/bustellomusic)

Embarrassing Fruits are a power trio working in the general idiom of "90s era Chapel Hill-style indie-rock." They're releasing a new album this weekend, so expect a whole bunch of new songs. 4:00 p.m. at 88.7 FM or wxdu.org.

Sunday, September 19
JP, Chrissie & The Fairground Boys (http://www.jpchrissie.com)
Amy Correia (http://www.amycorreia.com)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

Chrissie as in Pretenders founder & frontwoman Chrissie Hynde, who decided it was time for another new group of young turks (and, this time, a new name as well).

Monday, September 20
CocoRosie (http://www.cocorosieland.com)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

CocoRosie's precious, quirky, chirpy-perky weird-ass internal sister dialogue music is an acquired taste, to say the least, but also a wholly distinctive & remarkable one.
