sound.

Friday, August 20
=95 8P Chris Bryant - The 2010 Discovery Series
Middle school teacher by day, singer/songwriter by night, singer/
songwriter by night, Chris Bryant approaches varied genres and subject
matter with soulful honesty. It doesn't matter if he's singing about
love, love lost, social responsibility or having fun at a party - when
Chris sings, people listen. And when they listen, they believe him.

In 2010, Chris is playing a special series of shows at the Broad
Street Cafe. Each month, he'll play a 45-50 minute set of music from
an artist, band, or genre that's been influential or inspirational to
his musical development. He'll follow that up with a 45-50 minute set
of his own material. January's featured artist is Ben Harper. To

=95 10P Old Avenue (rock/pop/acoustic)
Old Avenue has been causing a stir since the summer months when their
performance momentum picked up throughout the triangle area.
Immediately after adding the final member to their current lineup, Old
Avenue performed as the headlining band for STRUT '09 at the
convention center. Shortly after they performed at Duke University in
front of 1,500 students, and at the Midtown Music series at North
Hills with the Embers to a crowd of 10,000. These performances led to
repeat and additional bookings throughout the triangle, and have kept
this eager band busy for months.

With a sound that can only be described as funky, jazzy, infectious
grooves that will make you dance, with melodies that were meant for
sing alongs, Old Avenue is the essence of the upbeat happy tunes we've
all been missing. As a five piece band with a great back story that
links all members back to Cardinal Gibbons High School, each member
will tell you that they feel fate brought them together.

Equally and independently amazing musicians, with talent well beyond
their years, Old Avenue is bound to make waves with the release of
this new album. 'Knockin' on Doors' is a refreshing break from the
emotional angst that our youthful music lovers have been buried in for
years. The upbeat, catchy tunes that pour from the piano keys and sing
through the sound of the saxophone, immediately catch onlookers off
guard. Old Avenue's music projects an "It's ok to smile.it's even ok
to dance" attitude.

=95 11P Holy Ghost Tent Revival
Characterized as "explosively intoxicating," Greensboro, NC's Holy
Ghost Tent Revival cannot be pigeonholed into any popular genre.
Melding brass with banjo, guitar, bass, drums, and keys this six-piece
ensemble boasts an eclectic mash of instruments and styles -- a
musical alchemy all their own.

The overall air of their creation breathes a sense of celebration and
salvation; of a raucous party where everyone's welcome and where even
the most stoic will find their toes tapping and a smile breaking free.
It's as if, in the same spirit as the blues greats that traveled the
highways of the American psyche before them, theirs is not music to
lament life's hardships but rather to celebrate in life itself; with
all its hodgepodge of pleasure and pain.

It is this transcendent energy that continuously propels Holy Ghost
Tent Revival to play the heart and soul of a North Carolina-born,
genre-defying new groove. With a penchant for crafting thoughtfully
playful lyrics and graced with exceptional musical skills, there are
seemingly no boundaries for this group as they travel the country
spreading the magic of their heart-throbbing, foot-stomping, good-time
music.

=95 8P Michael Thornton (country/acoustic/roots)
Michael Thornton first picked up the guitar in grade school in
Montgomery, AL, but didn=92t begin singing and songwriting until high
school and college as a part of his church choir. He and his buddies
from the choir ultimately formed a number of bands, trying out various
sounds over the next few years. While playing solo gigs in college in
Chapel Hill, NC, many of Michael=92s listeners repeatedly requested his
country covers, which seemed to fit him much more naturally than other
tunes, so he began to sing and write more and more country music. He
has since found his home in the country sound, after the tradition of
such artists as Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, David Allan Coe, and
Jerry Jeff Walker, and the undeniable influence upon any Montgomery
musician of Hank Williams. Still, he draws heavily upon the influences
of contemporary country artists like Corey Smith, Alison Krauss &
Union Station, and Eric Church. Michael is a songwriter/story-teller
who prides himself on his simplistic, stripped-down country style and
an intimate relationship with his audience. Michael is currently in
Montgomery recording his first full-length country album, but
continues to play live at various venues throughout the southeast. He
is looking forward to a finished record at some point this fall.

=95 10P The Hugeunots and Luego

The Huguenots (pop)
Often times, band biographies come across as contrived and ridden with
clich=E9, full of "coming to a town near you" and "forming a unique
synthesis of blah blah blah," often resulting in something that reads
like it was written by a computer, nonetheless making the band at
stake seem both prefabricated and entirely boring. So, in an effort to
distance ourselves from this trend, we will try to be as concise as
possible: We love pop music. We like songs that are under 3 1/2
minutes. We love things that are timeless (be it clothes, instruments,
sounds). We love rock and roll. We are not going for "unique
syntheses" or trying to "expand your horizons" or "create a tenuous
but altogether real personal connection" through our music. Rather our
philosophy comes more closely to, in the words of esteemed sonic
explorer Panda Bear, "Try to remember always just to have a good time"
If this combination doesn't sound entirely distasteful to you (and the
music above is properly invigorating), come see us when we play.
Listen to our songs. Dance along if you feel so inclined. That is
about as much as we can ask.

Luego (rock/indie)
Luego begins with Patrick Phelan. Born and raised in Texas, Patrick,
the youngest of three, began playing piano at an early age. He became
fascinated with 70s icons such as Rod Stewart and Mick Jagger. Upon
graduating high school, Phelan relocated to Durham, NC to study
Philosophy and Spanish at Duke University.
It was here that he began Luego as a solo act. Slowly he began
adding musicians for short and longish periods of time. Upon
graduating in 2007, he recorded an EP with what members he could come
up with and toured that EP for the next year and a half with a
rotating cast of musicians until touring wore them down and left
Patrick without a band.
In September 2008, Patrick sought out the help of producer/bassist
Jeff Crawford to make a solo record under the Luego name. Within weeks
he had assembled the current band, consisting of Peter Holsapple (the
dBs, R.E.M.), Nick Jaeger (Roman Candle, Max Indian), Jeff Crawford
and Rob DiMauro. what brought them together was a mutual love for the
Band.
After a year of playing together, Luego released its full length
debut, Taped-together Stories. Ocho is their second release.

"Ocho thrives on trying more. Influences are a burden. Finally folding
them until they're beneath your tunes rather than simply on top of them
=97which Luego does on Ocho=97is an accomplishment that can't be
understated.

Ocho, Phelan's second LP as Luego, works best when it pulls both from
and against the classic pop songbook, or when Phelan and his generally
excellent band play hard, fast and loose with their fascinations.
-Grayson Currin, Indy Weekly

"I cannot emphasize enough how the sincerity of Phelan's lyricism
makes this album a cut above. If you can appreciate alt-country sounds
like Wilco and Blitzen Trapper, you'll also appreciate Taped-Together
Stories."
-Tara Lacey, Performer Magazine

Sunday, August 22 - Sunday Night Jazz Series
=95 7:30P Sound Syndicate (jazz)
Four young but serious musicians trying to capture the essense of
American music through the traditions of jazz. Including Christian
Dashiell on bass, JC Martin on guitar, Larry Q. Draughn on drums and
Myk'l Hanna on vocals.
