Kooley High (http://www.myspace.com/kooleyhigh)
Sarah P. Duke Gardens, Durham

This is the latest in Duke Performances' summer Music in the Gardens
series. Kooley High are a Raleigh hip-hop outfit who are among a
perennial undercurrent of folks still fighting the good fight begun by
artists like De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest, the Fugees & the Roots --
namely, to make rap music a wee bit less hypermasculine & faux-gangsta.

David Karsten Daniels (http://www.davidkarstendaniels.com/)
Bright Young Things
Fight the Big Bull (http://www.myspace.com/fightthebigbull)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

This is a CD-release party for former Chapel Hill resident David Karsten
Daniels' new transcontinental collaboration with the Virginia band Fight
the Big Bull, "I Mean To Live Here Still," a collection of Thoreau poems
set to music. Which seems like it would come out a certain way
(regardless of how much or little you know or recall about the various
protagonists) but in fact came out quite a bit differently: hopeful &
ecstatic and, dare I say it, maybe a little Sufjan Stevens-y. But
weirder, and yes, that's possible.

Friday, July 9

Friday, July 9
I Was Totally Destroying It
(http://www.reverbnation.com/iwastotallydestroyingit)

This is apparently the last "I Was Totally Destroying U2" show for quite
some time to come, so act accordingly.

all at once.

Saturday, July 10
Weatherkings (http://www.myspace.com/weatherkingsband)
The Julies
The Northern Howl
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

The Julies contain some (though it's unclear which, or how many) members
of the Huguenots and the late lamented Violet Vector & the Lovely
Lovelies.

Sunday, July 11
Chatham County Line (http://www.chathamcountyline.com/)
WXDU 88.7 FM, Durham

They're playing the Cradle Saturday night, so don't be surprised if
they're unable to get their fancy bluegrass suits laundered and pressed
in time for this show. You'll just have to imagine them however you wish
to see them in your mind's eye. 4:00 p.m, 88.7 FM or wxdu.org

Sunday, July 11
True Love Always (http://www.mindspring.com/~jlindaman/main.html)
Unrest (http://teenbeat.net/unrest2010.html)
Bossanova (http://www.bossanova.ca/)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

This is one of a handful of 26th-Anniversary shows by Teen-Beat Records
artists, including label flagship Unrest (the classic 1991-1994 lineup -
these shows are only their 2nd reunion since 1994).

Monday, July 12
Dry Heathens (http://www.myspace.com/dryheathens)
The Goodnight Loving (http://www.myspace.com/thegoodnightloving)
2702 Lawndale, Durham

2702 Lawndale had its first house-show-related police visit the other
night, during the big July 4th blowout, but the cop did the classic "If
I have to come back, there'll be trouble" routine and then never
returned. Lucky break . . . or just plain Durham?
