Thursday, June 17
Tres Chicas (http://www.treschicas.org/)
Southern Village Square, Chapel Hill

This is an outdoor early-evening show; you can get more info here:
http://www.southernvillage.com/movies-music.htm

I'm just guessing but I assume you could hook yrself up with a nice
picnic at the SV Weaver St & sit on the lawn.

Thursday, June 17
Last of the Great Sideshow Freaks
Mount Moriah (http://www.myspace.com/mountmoriah)
The Sundowners
The Whisky Smugglers
Mandolin Orange (http://www.myspace.com/mandolinorange)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

This is a benefit for the MS Society. I saw Mount Moriah last week &
they're at the top of their game right now - truly one of the best bands
in the Triangle. (& I heard Mandolin Orange a week or two ago on the
radio & they were pretty stunning as well)

Thursday, June 17
Mosadi Music (http://www.mosadimusic.com/)
The Beast
Freebass 808
Swaso (http://www.myspace.com/swasomusic)
Broad Street Cafe, Durham

This is being billed as Rock vs Hip-Hop, though it's more of a
progression from one to the other as the evening goes on, from the
glammy power-trio rock of Swaso, thru the hip-hop-inflected soul/rock of
Mosadi Music, to the jazz-inflected live-band hip-hop of the Beast,
ending with Freebass 808, who're described as "a two man Hip Hop
supergroup led by the progressive lyricism of Suede (of the legendary
Camp Lo) and the neck-breaking production and live drumming of 9-time
beat battle champion Applejuice Kid."

Is it just me, or is it a weird & kinda fucked-up coincidence that this
big hip-hop-related show is up against *another* big hip-hop-related
show at the Pinhook on the same night?

Thursday, June 17
Aden
Lizh (http://www.lizhmusic.com)
Dasan Ahanu (http://www.dasanahanu.com/)
Uprite Lions (http://www.upritelions.com/)
The Pinhook, Durham

Mentioned this a sec ago, but how odd is it that this show is up against
another big hip-hop-related show at the Broad Street on the same night?

Anyway, says the Pinhook:

Dasan Ahanu - Conciousness expanding hip-hop with focus on storytelling
and progressive politics.
Aden - Sharp, jittery beats with passionate, pleading lyrics.
Lizh - Soul, R&B, and Rock all focused around Lizh's syrupy, powerful
voice.
Uprite Lions - Hip Hop with deep NC roots. Gospel, soul, and jazz
influences.

Thursday, June 17
Dead Meadow (http://www.deadmeadow.com)
Richard Bacchus & the Luckiest Girls
(http://www.myspace.com/richardbacchus)
Static Minds
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Static Minds & Richard Bacchus's Luckiest Girls are two Raleigh
Rockbands of the jeans-jacket-and-swagger variety. I clearly haven't
kept up with Dead Meadow, as they're still a sort of elves-and-forests
psych band in my memory.

Thursday, June 17
Colossus (http://www.myspace.com/thecolossuswillcrushyou)
White Tiger and the Bed of Roses
(http://www.myspace.com/tigersandroses)
Tir Na Nog, Raleigh

Thursday, June 17
Heather McEntire (http://www.bellafea.com/)
Jenks Miller (http://www.myspace.com/horsebacknoise)
Grouper (http://www.myspace.com/grouperrepuorg)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Nightlight says that other Grouper shows on this tour have been selling
out & that you should plan to swing by earlier during ping-pong Thursday
to get tickets. I've never even heard of her, but she's from Portland &
I'm really only useful with NC music info, so I guess you should take
Nightlight's word for it.

Either way you'll get to see Jenks Miller & Heather McEntire performing
stripped-down versions of Mount Moriah tunes, and perhaps the odd Un
Deux Trois song as well.

Friday, June 18
Embarrassing Fruits (http://www.myspace.com/embarrassingfruitsband)
Lonnie Walker (http://www.myspace.com/lonniewalker)
Birds & Arrows (http://www.myspace.com/birdsandarrows)
D-Town Brass
Golden Belt, Durham

This is the Independent Weekly's "Best in the Triangle" party, featuring
four great local bands (none of whom, it should be pointed out, were
actually voted Best in the Triangle by the reader/voters in this year's
poll, which says more about the sheer number of great bands in the
Triangle than anything else).

Lonnie Walker (9:45-11 pm)
D-Town Brass (8:30-9:30 pm)
Embarrassing Fruits (7:30-8:15 pm)
Birds and Arrows (6:30-7:15 pm)

Friday, June 18
Richard Bacchus & the Luckiest Girls
(http://www.myspace.com/richardbacchus)
The Spring Collection
Sadlack's Heroes, Raleigh

The Spring Collection are a new Raleigh Rock supergroup, featuring
members of the Bleeding Hearts, the Cartridge Family & others.

Friday, June 18
Greg Humphreys
The Tomahawks (http://www.myspace.com/jeffcrawfordmusic)
Broad Street Cafe, Durham

Friday, June 18
Make (http://www.myspace.com/thebandmake)
Tasha-Yar (http://www.myspace.com/tashayarband)
Buck Gooter (http://www.myspace.com/buckgooter)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Friday, June 18

Thao & Mirah with the Most of All
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Friday, June 18

River City Ransom (http://www.myspace.com/rivercityransomband)
Marco Pollo (http://www.myspace.com/marcopollonc)

Friday, June 18
Juan Huevos (http://www.myspace.com/juanhuevos)
The Pinhook, Durham

This is an "after party" for the Independent's Best of the Triangle
party, held at Golden Belt earlier in the evening.

Saturday, June 19
Schooner (http://www.schoonermusic.com)
Gray Young (http://www.myspace.com/grayyoung)
Bowerbirds (http://www.bowerbirds.org)
Hammer No More the Fingers (http://www.hnmtf.com)
The Tender Fruit (http://www.myspace.com/thetenderfruit)
Triangle Brewing Company, Durham

This is the This Machine Kills Cancer benefit, and it runs from around
noon until around midnight. Shayne Miel is the frontman (and sometimes
only member) of the Future Kings of Nowhere, and he has lymphoma, which
was discovered earlier this year to have spread to his brain. He's still
fighting it fiercely, and making progress, but it's the sort of thing
that can seriously drain a family, even one with health insurance.

Not content with just fighting Shayne's cancer, he & Rebekah are also
starting a nonprofit, "Friends With Benefits," to help other musicians
with health issues.

Here's the complete, kinda mind-blowing lineup:

12:30 p.m. Catie Yerkes
1:00 p.m. Tea and Tempests
1:30 p.m. The Mercators
2:00 p.m. The Tourist
2:30 p.m. Mike Casey Magic
