=95 8P Spencer Sholes (alt/folk rock/funk)
Lifelong musician, songwriter. Specializing in guitar and vocals.
Playing original music wherever I can get in the door.
=95 Rock vs Hip Hop - $5 Cover
=95 9:45 Swaso (pop/pop rock)
Chapel Hill-based trio Swaso formed in March 2009. The Pop Rock group
got their start as a regular opener for "the ultimate Michael Jackson
tribute band"-- Who's Bad. Over the course of its career, Swaso has
amassed both a local and national following for their original songs,
edgy lyrics, and catchy hooks. Swaso has taken an original approach to
"making it in the biz," opting not to take the traditional label
route, but instead choosing to connect with fans directly through
various online social networks and free music promotions.
=95 10:35 Mosadi Music (hip hop/funk-heavy hip hop soul)
Mosadi Music's debut performance in October 2003 was highly
anticipated and glowingly received by fans and lovers of live music.
MOSADI=92s original music is rooted in the soul of Curtis Mayfield,
James Brown funk, Zepplin rock, and the socially-compassionate
lyricism of nineties hip hop artists The Fugees, and Tribe Called
Quest. Mosadi's music reaches audiences of various ages and musical
tastes. MOSADI has shared the stage with such diverse talents as
Meshell Ndegeocello, Angelique Kidjo, Nick Whitley (The Cherry
Valence), Yahzarah (solo soulstress and former Erykah Badu background
vocalist) and hip hop recording artists Little Brother
while playing side stages at arena shows featuring Mary J. Blige,
Beyonce, and Destiny=92s Child. MOSADI=92s musicians have honed their
distinctive sounds by playing, recording and touring with other bands.
MOSADI=92s diverse sound fuses with many different genres of music from
funk, hip hop to rock, which is why MOSADI boasts a wide arrangement
of influences and has opened and headlined for Indy Rock bands, World
Music artists, Jazz, Soul and Hip hop artists alike.
=95 11:30 The Beast (hip hop/jazz/soul)
Equally comfortable in the worlds of hip-hop and jazz, The Beast
developed its revolutionary sound at the University of North Carolina
at Chapel Hill. While pianist Eric Hirsh, drummer Stephen Coffman, and
bassist Peter Kimosh were earning their music degrees in the jazz
department, emcee Pierce Freelon (son of 6-time Grammy nominated jazz
vocalist, Nnenna Freelon) was developing his intelligent lyricism at
cyphers and music venues across campus. After graduating, the quartet
joined forces in 2007 and quickly distinguished themselves as one of
the dopest bands in North Carolina through their high energy live show
and exceptional compositions.
"one of the most imaginative, uninhibited and best live acts in
memory." -The Independent
=95 12:30 Freebase (hip hop)
Friday, June 18
=95 8P Daniel Levi Goans (folk)
Recorded in a single blistering North Carolina summer, Daniel Levi
Goans=92 debut solo album Choice Cannonballs manages to combine both the
timeless ache of southern folks and the hot heat of summer sweat. You
can still feel the push of the energy behind the recording while you
are pulled through the album by the weight of the years he spent
crafting the songs. This album has been a long time coming.
Before recording Choice Cannonballs the North Carolina native has
spent six years co-writing and touring all over the East coast with
his band, The War (formerly Starting Tuesday). The War has provided
Goans with a platform to establish himself as a musician and
songwriter, offering his sincere earnestness and weight to its indie
pop rock sound. The War=92s crisp recordings and socially conscious
lyrics have inspired fans and led to the band=92s successful tours and
impressive sales. In the late winter of 2009 the band decided to take
some time off from touring. Goans spent these months sitting down with
his hopes on one side and his melancholy doubts on the other and
Choice Cannonballs is the result. You=92re left wanting to go home but
can't shake the feeling that you'll have to leave once you get there.
While you can still hear the James Taylor echoes of North Carolina in
Goans' lyrical nostalgia, the raw and plaintive folk overtones are
what Choice Cannonballs truly offers, harking back to greats like
Dylan himself. By picking out a tightly-knit mix of southern styles,
Goans has crafted an eclectic album that can't be let go once you=92ve
heard it. You'll find yourself walking down the sidewalk in a town you
just moved to, wondering if this could be the place you were actually
born, and then suddenly realize you can somehow still hear Choice
Cannonballs playing from the ipod speakers in the back pocket of your
favorite jeans, the ones you accidentally left down south.
=95 10P Greg Humphreys
=95 11PThe Tomahawks (indie/rock/roots)
Saturday, June 19
=95 8:30P Tad Dreis Trio
Tad Dreis leads an acoustic trio of guitar, upright bass, and
accordion through original folk-pop songs which tell tales of haunted
telemarketers, lonely truckers, pear blossoms, and Celtic mall drama.
His music is by turns catchy, lovely, and lyrically detailed (AND he
plays a mean harmonica).
Over the last ten years, Tad has released four albums and toured in
over twenty states, performing solo on the road at colleges from the
East Coast to the Midwest. His songs have won him acclaim in
international songwriting competitions and live performer shoot-outs
from L.A. to Atlanta, and he also maintains a healthy presence online,
playing monthly webcasts live using his laptop and taking requests
from a nationwide Internet audience.
For this show at Broad Street Cafe, Tad is accompanied by Seth Barden
on bass and Charles Cleaver on keys and accordion.
He'll play two sets, at 8:30 and 10:00 pm.
Sunday, June 20
=95 7:30P Marie Vanderbeck Quartet (jazz/swing/blues)
Hear jazz sweet and sassy =96 as it is meant to be heard. Throw in a
bit of salsa, some blues, a touch of folk and you have an eclectic
sound that will have you singing along and tapping your feet =96 maybe
even dancing!
On keyboards, Erich=92s smooth and charming style will have you swaying
in time. His music ranges from relaxing to high energy dance music.
And you=92ll love his improvisations =96 tunes that you thought you knew,
you=92ll now hear with a different beat.
Stan=92s sax sound moves you from mellow to foot-tapping. He makes his
sax talk =93sweet and sassy=94 all the while moving you in a gentle
rhythm.
And this background fits Marie=92s vocals so well. Marie=92s phrasing and
tuning brings out the best of each song. Her rich voice takes you
high and takes you low.
That=92s what makes this jazz group SWEET AND SASSY.
Featuring:
Marie Vanderbeck - vocals
Ken Broun - keyboard
Stan Levy - sax
Tuesday, June 22
=95 8P Anna Rose Beck (acoustic/folk)
Born and raised in Austin, Texas, Anna moved to North Carolina to
attend Duke as an undergraduate. Inspired by the music scene in and
around Durham, she began playing guitar and writing songs in 2008.
With influences ranging from Paul Simon, The Beatles, and Bob Dylan to
more contemporary artists Regina Spektor, Jaymay, Iron & Wine, Sufjan
Stevens and Laura Marling, she is in the process of developing her own
sound and musical style. With a voice that is at once unique, gentle
and passionate, Anna sings about coming of age and young love, leading
many to compare her sound to "something that would be in a movie like
Juno." She is in the process of writing and recording her first album
which she hopes to release by the end of 2010.
