The Ravenna Colt (http://www.theravennacolt.com/)
The Parson Red Heads (http://www.theparsonredheads.com/)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

Aloha (http://www.musicofaloha.com/ )
Ben Davis + The Jetts (http://www.lovitt.com/artists/bendavis.html)
Pomegranates (http://www.myspace.com/pomegranatesart)
Local 506, Chapel Hill
Ben Davis has released three-and-a-half records under his own name (along with another half-dozen-plus with his former bands Sleepytime Trio, Milemarker and Bats & Mice). His latest, Charge It Up!, is a catchy, propulsive slab of postpunk, the kind that wouldn't look askance at you if you wanted to dance.

Lynn Blakey
Tim Sparks
Tim Carless
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

The Love Language (http://www.myspace.com/thelovelanguage)
The Light Pines (http://www.myspace.com/lightpines)
Moneybrother (http://bladencountyrecords.com/artists/moneybrother/)
Pour House, Raleigh
Do NOT arrive late for this show! Moneybrother is a Swede named Anders Wendin. He's won Grammies & sold lots of records in Sweden, but he's thus-far mostly unknown in the US. His new album, Real Control, is his first domestic release; it's out on Bladen County, the Portland label that released the first Love Language album.
The record is pretty fucking insane; it's a dizzying mishmash of big anthemic Springsteen-meets-Clash rock, plus a major dose of ABBA-style Eurocheeze, plus some heavy Sparks-style nod-and-a-wink humor. Plus a few songs that touch on ska, reggae, and soul. It's quite brilliant, and quite mad.
Bladen County co-owner (and Raleigh expat) Matt Brown tells me "his live show is on fire . . . the guy's used to playing festival size shit all over europe. it's fun to watch him work for it in small clubs. they join the Against Me tour after the raleigh date."

In the Year of the Pig (http://www.southernloveprod.com/ityotp.htm)
The Curtains of Night (http://myspace.com/thecurtainsofnight)
Tir Na Nog, Raleigh
Two Holidays for Quince bands (plus Bellafea, fronted by HfQ co-owner Heather McEntire) head to Raleigh to remind all the rockers that the title for heaviest town in the Triangle has migrated westward. The Curtains of Night and In the Year of the Pig are both massive, and both obsessed, eternally, with tone, sustain, and the transmutational properties of volume.

Deliver Me From Nowhere
NC School of Science and Math, Durham
This is a benefit for Coalition to Unchain Dogs and the Southern Coalition for Social Justice; what it is, is two things. First, at 7:30, a free screening of Terrence Malick's amazing Charlie Starkweather movie, Badlands (1973, Martin Sheen & Sissy Spacek).
Second, at 9:30, a tribute concert to Bruce Springsteen's NEBRASKA, featuring members of Red Collar, The Rosewood Bluff, Midtown Dickens, and Mt. Moriah.
Friday, April 16
Xiu Xiu (http://www.epitonic.com/artists/xiuxiu.html)
tUnE-yArDs (http://tune-yards.com/)
Local 506, Chapel Hill
tUnE-yArDs is a woman named Merrill Garbus; her debut album from 2009, bIrD-bRaInS, was in my top-10 of the year. It's an amazing mix of found sound, rudimentary beats, ukelele, random loops, and her astonishing voice, which can go from childlike and sing-songy to rich and soulful in the space of a couple of lines. The best way to explain her may be via a video, which sort of illustrates how she works: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqV5KzbNYIQ.
I am *SO* excited about this show. I've never seen crazy art-damaged formerly-SF, now-Durham band Xiu Xiu either, but for me tonight it's all about the tUnE-yArDs; I'm not sure I'll have any love left once they're finished.
Friday, April 16

Beloved Binge (http://www.myspace.com/belovedbinge)
Free Electric State (http://www.myspace.com/freeelectricstate)
The Pinhook, Durham
This is a CD-release show for the long-awaited Free Electric State full-length, "Caress." It's guitarrrific in a chugging overdriven Nth-Brit-Invasiony kind of way.
Friday, April 16
Tonk
Eddie Taylor
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh
Saturday, April 17
Countdown Quartet (http://www.countdownq.com/)
The Wusses (http://thewusses.com/)
Big Fat Gap (http://www.bigfatgap.com/)
Museum of Natural Sciences, Raleigh
This is a daytime Earth Day celebration at the Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh, so there'll be tons of activities (and zillions of kids) in addition to the bands.
Saturday, April 17
Luego (http://luegomusic.com/)
The Tomahawks (http://www.myspace.com/jeffcrawfordmusic)
Jon Lindsay
The Pinhook, Durham
Saturday, April 17
The Love Language (http://www.myspace.com/thelovelanguage)
Harlem (http://www.myspace.com/harlemduh)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill
If you haven't seen The Love Language in the past couple of months, then you've not seen this version. The lineup changed dramatically, as several former members reactivated their long-dormant original band, The Light Pines. The new band is leaner, but no less catchy.
Saturday, April 17

Dry Heathens (http://www.myspace.com/dryheathens)
Titus Andronicus (http://www.myspace.com/titusandronicus)
Local 506, Chapel Hill
I'm pretty sure the days of having to explain any of these three bands are probably long gone. Here's a link to a review of a recent Titus Andronicus show in Toronto: http://www.chromewaves.net/2010/04/titus-andronicus-hollerado-and-sandman-viper-command-at-sneaky-dees-in-toronto/
While you're at the show, don't forget to pick up the latest Spider Bags 7" on Durham's own Bull City Records. It's most excellent.
