Saturday, September 26
Billy Sugarfix (http://www.soundclick.com/bands/8/billysugarfix.htm)
Wes Phillips (http://www.myspace.com/wesleydongeroga)
Felix Obelix (http://www.myspace.com/felixobelix)
Organos
Bee vs. Moth
ArtsCenter, Carrboro

This is the Liminal Festival, assembled by Wendy Spitzer (Felix Obelix, Lemming Malloy, etc). The website says "The Liminal Festival’s goals are twofold: 1) to bring together musicians who are bridging genres, working to integrate genres or otherwise bend the rules of traditional musical genre, for performances to highlight the possibilities of this cross-genre experimentation and 2) to expose listeners, especially underserved or otherwise nontraditional audiences, to these performances."

Performers include Billy Sugarfix (whose first solo album, "Summer Tempests," just came out last week, and is brilliant); Organos, the solo debut by Schooner bassist Maria Albani; Wendy's own crazy-awesome time-traveling artrock band Felix Obelix; Wes Phillips (ex-Ticonderoga), plus a couple of out-of-town bands.

Between sets, the folks from Greensboro band Invisible will have their Rhythm 1001 mechanical sequencer set up in the lobby. It's basically a giant spinning metal disc with 1000s of holes for pegs, which can be arranged to trigger a series of switches connected to various rhythm devices.

Saturday, September 26
Inspector 22
Waumiss (http://www.myspace.com/waumiss)
Wild Wild Geese
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Inspector 22 will be appearing in a rare full-band format; this may or may not be a release shindig for their recent "The Waiting Grave," which is a crazy demented piece of low-fi aggro-folk about, well, Death.

It's definitely some sort of release party for the new Wild Wild Geese EP. And any show with Waumiss on the bill is automatically a party.

Saturday, September 26
Black Skies (http://blackskies.us/)
The Curtains of Night (http://myspace.com/thecurtainsofnight)
Make
Local 506, Chapel Hill

A night of ultra-heaviness with massive dirge duo Curtains of Night, and Sabbathy power trio Black Skies.

Saturday, September 26
Wigg Report (http://www.synchronizedswim.org)
Blood Red River (http://www.myspace.com/bloodredriver)
Birds & Arrows (http://www.myspace.com/birdsandarrows)
The Pinhook, Durham

The Wigg Report are the best live band in Durham. Mark my words.

12:00 - Blood Red River
11:00 - The Wigg Report
10:00 - Birds and Arrows

Sunday, September 27
The Trousers
The Ts (http://www.myspace.com/thettttt)
Richard Bacchus & the Luckiest Girls (http://www.myspace.com/richardbacchus)
The Infamous Sugar
Rocket Cottage
White Collar Crime, Raleigh

This is a benefit show for longtime Raleigh music-scene fixture (and my upstate-SC homeboy) Tom Cushman, who got laid out flat by an extremely heavy case of pneumonia which had him in the hospital & on a ventilator for a while. Needless to say, he's now saddled with a ton of medical bills.

I've said it before & I suspect I'll say it again before we're done: it sucks that people have to throw bake-sales and rock-shows to help pay off medical bills in this country . . . but it's damn nice that so many good people are willing to do it when necessary.

In addition to the bands listed above, Kenny Roby, Caitlin Cary, Gringo, Man Will Destroy Himself, The Bleeding Hearts & Sea Legs are also on the bill. Show starts at 3:00 p.m. Bring money.

Sunday, September 27
Western Civ. (http://westerncivrock.com)
WXDU 88.7 FM, Durham

Western Civ moved to town a couple of years ago, from Alabama, but they could just as easily have moved here from the mid-'90s neighborhood of indie-rockers like Pavement & Sonic Youth. Or, for the 2 of you who might remember, they remind me a lot of Wilmington's late lamented Rodeo Boy.

Determine your own referent of choice when they play live starting at 4:00 p.m. at 88.7 FM or wxdu.org.

Sunday, September 27
The Coathangers (http://www.myspace.com/fuckthecoathangers)
Pink Flag (http://www.myspace.com/pinkflagnc)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

The Coathangers are an all-woman band from Atlanta whose debut album was chock-full of brilliant snotty synth-punk songs with titles like "Leave My Shit Alone" and "Nestle in My Boobies." Their second album didn't stick with me quite as much as the first, but it's a safe bet their live show will be a winner of fall-down sloppy fun.

Monday, September 28
Graveyard Fields
School of Seven Bells (http://www.myspace.com/schoolofsevenbells)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Tuesday, September 29
Gray Young (http://www.myspace.com/grayyoung)
The Subjects
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Tuesday, September 29
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart (http://www.myspace.com/thepainsofbeingpureatheart)
The Depreciation Guild (http://www.myspace.com/thedepreciationguild)
Cymbals Eat Guitars (http://www.myspace.com/cymbalseatguitars)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Wednesday, September 30
Tenderhooks (http://www.myspace.com/tenderhooks)
The Tender Fruit (http://www.myspace.com/thetenderfruit)
The Cassavettes (http://www.myspace.com/cassavettes)
The Pinhook, Durham

Go see Tender Fruit, please. Their songs feature just the right amount of southern-gothic detail to keep yr ears perked, and Christy Smith's voice is, for lack of a better descriptor, Gillian Welch-y. In the best possible way.

Wednesday, September 30
Fin Fang Foom (http://www.lovitt.com/artists/finfangfoom.html)
These Arms are Snakes (http://www.thesearmsaresnakes.org)
DD/MM/YYYY (http://www.myspace.com/ddmmyyyy)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Wednesday, September 30
Pinche Gringo (http://www.myspace.com/pinchegringoband)
Cheap Time (http://www.myspace.com/cheaptime)
Reservoir, Carrboro

Thursday, October 1
Max Indian (http://www.myspace.com/maxindian)
Lighthouse Music (http://myspace.com/rbhuntveterans)
The Pinhook, Durham

Pinhook says that all Thursday shows will henceforth commence at 9:00. To wit:

10:00 - Max Indian
9:00 - Lighthouse Music

Thursday, October 1
Dan Deacon (http://www.dandeacon.com/)
Nuclear Power Pants (http://www.bxxxxzt.com/)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

Thursday, October 1
Richard Buckner (http://www.richardbuckner.com/)
Brian Doub
The Garage, Winston-Salem

The first time I saw Richard Buckner doing his current thing, which involves him sitting down with an electric guitar & alternating between his cutting singer-songwriter songs & building walls of noise/rumble with a rack of distortion pedals, I didn't really get it. The second time, at XXMerge this past summer, I most emphatically *did* . . . it was one of my favorite sets of the festival. The songs dissolve into fuzz & rumble & then it re-coalesces into another song.

Thursday, October 1
Goner (http://www.gonertheband.com/)
Prabir and the Substitutes (http://www.prabirandthesubstitutes.com/)
Zapruder Point
Tir Na Nog, Raleigh

Thursday, October 1
The Twilight Sad (http://www.myspace.com/thetwilightsad)
brakesbrakesbrakes (http://www.myspace.com/brakesband)
We Were Promised Jetpacks (http://www.myspace.com/wewerepromisedjetpacks)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Friday, October 2
Monologue Bombs (http://www.myspace.com/themonologuebombs)
Zapruder Point
Rebus Works, Raleigh

This is part of the First Friday gallery-hop type thing, so I assume it's an evening rather than latenight affair. Monologue Bombs is the solo project of Goner singer/keyboardist Scott Phillips, and Zapruder Point is his brother Dan, who used to be in Goner precursor Boy Wonder Jinx before moving up north.

Friday, October 2
Zardoz (http://www.myspace.com/zardoznc)
HOG
The Pinhook, Durham

This is the debut of Zardoz, which is a prog/metal band featuring some ex-members of Fighting Poseidon. Like their Durham compadres Tooth (RIP) and Grappling Hook, they have a bona-fide frontman, and it's good to see them supporting that fine tradition.

Also on the bill, Tooth guitarist Rich James's new band HOG.

Friday, October 2
Embarrassing Fruits (http://www.myspace.com/embarrassingfruitsband)
Wavves (http://www.myspace.com/wavves)
Ganglian (http://www.myspace.com/ganglian)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

If you're not a regular reader of the influential MP3 blogs of the moment, then here's a heads-up: Wavves is/are in the top-5 most-buzzed-about for 2009. I don't remember what the music sounded like, and instead of rushing out to buy/download the full-length I instead deleted the MP3s I'd downloaded, but that doesn't really mean anything either way. This is just to say that if you're trying to remain culturally current, here's a moment to track.

Saturday, October 3
Eugene Chadbourne (http://www.eugenechadbourne.com/)
Marsh Woodwinds, Raleigh

Greensboroian Dr. Eugene Chadbourne has been exploring the intersection of country, jazz & the avant garde for 30+ years now, via a bewildering & never-ending stream of combos large & small, and an endless series of albums, some on actual labels, and some self-released. He's a true North Carolina treasure, and the most geniusy of our state's current small crop of geniuses.

Saturday, October 3
Inflowential (http://www.myspace.com/inflowential)
The Love Language (http://www.myspace.com/thelovelanguage)
Motor Skills
Pour House, Raleigh

This is another party related to the recent local comp Hear Here, which I still haven't heard, because "here" apparently doesn't include Durham.

Saturday, October 3
The Lovely Feathers (http://www.thelovelyfeathers.com/)
The Rural Alberta Advantage (http://www.myspace.com/theraa)
Duke Coffeehouse, Durham

Saturday, October 3
Nervous But Excited (http://www.myspace.com/nervousbutexcited)
Humble Tripe (http://www.myspace.com/shawnluby)
The Pinhook, Durham

12:00 - Nervous but Excited
11:00 - Humble Tripe

Saturday, October 3
The Travesties (http://www.myspace.com/travestiesnc)
Free Electric State (http://www.myspace.com/freeelectricstate)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Free Electric State are a new/loud swirly Durham band who take a cue from UK bands like Jesus & Mary Chain. They feature former members of the Ex-Members.

The Travesties emerged from the ashes of Jett Rink, and they bring a slightly more soulful, slowed-down vibe to their old band's frantic new-wave energy.

Sunday, October 4
Veelee (http://www.myspace.com/seeveelee)
WXDU 88.7 FM, Durham

Veelee are Matt & Ginger. Matt used to be in Opening Flower Happy Bird. In Veelee, they make processed, at-times chilly pop that's at once minimalist but complex. Live, the setup is guitar, drums, keyboards & looped/sampled bass; over the radio you'll be seriously challenged to figure out how two people are playing so much stuff. 4:00 p.m. at 88.7 FM or wxdu.org.

Sunday, October 4
noman (http://www.myspace.com/nomandetroit)
Reservoir, Carrboro

Monday, October 5
Hearts and Daggers (http://www.heartsanddaggers.com/ )
Mother Jackson
Up With the Joneses
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh

Tuesday, October 6
Darker My Love (http://www.myspace.com/darkermylove)
All the Saints (http://www.myspace.com/allthesaints)
A Place to Bury Strangers (http://www.myspace.com/aplacetoburystrangers)
Local 506, Chapel Hill
