1) "LA BIBLIOTECA POPULAR ALEJO CAPELO" IN ECUADOR: PRESENTATION BY
ANNA GRANT!
Join us at the Internationalist on Tuesday, August 25th at 7:30 PM for
an exciting report on radical community space in Ecuador!
La Biblioteca Popular "Alejo Capelo"** is an alternative community
space for the neighborhood La Argelia Alta in Quito, Ecuador. Quito is
a city of about 2 million people, and in a peripheral neighborhood
such as La Argelia, families are often recent migrants from the
countryside making their way in an urban environment for the first
time. Education for these families is a tool for survival, a way to
secure an economic future in the city, and its style is often
top-down, authoritarian, and Eurocentric. The "People's Library"
operates with the philosophy that education and knowledge can be
produced, transformed, and evaluated by the "students" themselves, and
that an educational space must also be a space for community-building,
cooperation, organization, consciousness-raising, family, dialogue,
and liberation.
On Tuesday, August 25th at 7:30 Anna Grant will present a talk and
slideshow about La Argelia, the team of young people who started the
library and the children who keep it going, the events and activities
taking place there (including a two-week long day camp that just came
to a close), and the long-term vision of the project. We are
fundraising for a video projector, but we wanted the fundraising to be
an activity by which a real relationship could be formed between the
library and a community of North Americans. This is the beginning of
that relationship, and they will be sending more photos and updates
from Quito in the coming months.
If you are interested in any of the following themes, or in volunteer
opportunities/contacts in Latin America, please come share this
experience: urban growth and peripheral neighborhoods, popular
education, community-building, neighborhood organizing, arts and
consciousness-raising, intercultural issues in the Andes, gender roles
and gender violence.
**Alejo Capelo : Founder of the Regional Federation of Workers of
Ecuador, wrote for the periodical "Land and Liberty" in Mexico, poet
and anarchist at the beginning of the 20th century.
2) SUPPORT THE BEEHIVE COLLECTIVE!
The Beehive collective (http://www.beehivecollective.org) is an
amazing radical design collective who exists "to cross-pollinate the
grassroots, by creating collaborative, anti-copyright images that can
be used as educational and organizing tools." We've hosted many
Beehive tours and events at the Internationalist in the past, and
offer some of their innovative posters and patches for sale at the
store. They've asked us to spread the word about an easy and
effective way to help them raise money towards their forthcoming
poster about mountaintop removal and coal mining in Appalachia.
PLEASE support the Hive by following the instructions below- it's free
and only take a minute!
*YOUR CLICKS ARE NEEDED URGENTLY!*
NAU's GRANT FOR CHANGE is in its final week.
For us, winning this grant means complete coverage of the entire costs
of printing and distributing our upcoming TRUE COST OF COAL graphic
campaign. We need your vote of support by AUGUST 31st.

As we bees near the completion of the True Costs of Coal graphic, we
have been gearing up to raise the funds needed to print 10,000 posters
and several large-scale cloth banners need for us to launch the
campaign nation wide and return these teaching tools to the grassroots
organizers in Appalachia. In the midst of wracking our brains figuring
out how we were going to fundraise the required amount, we have
applied for a poster-printing grant sponsored by the Nau Clothing
Company that would almost cover the costs!
The best part is that, unlike most grants, the decision making process
is made partially through an online popular vote by folks like us!
That means that ANYONE can help make the True Costs of Coal a reality
by following the simple steps below. Please take a few seconds to
support the Collective by logging onto the link below, registering to
vote, and then ranking the True Costs of Coal project so that we have
a chance at this grant!

3) PRISON ABOLITION READING GROUP! (MON 8/24, 7 PM)
The Internationalist Prison Books Collective invites you to attend our
monthly reading group exploring the theory and practice of the prison
abolition movement. Together we read and discuss issues relating to
the prison industrial complex in the US and internationally, histories
of prisoner resistance, and strategies for organizing against
ever-expanding rates of incarceration. This reading group is open to
everyone, but specifically oriented towards individuals working in
organizations (such as the Prison Books Collective and others) who are
struggling around prison issues, or who have experienced the prison
system firsthand or in their families/communities.
This month each participant is invited to find short readings that
discuss alternatives to prisons, either contemporary or historical,
and bring them in to present to other participants. For more
information, please email prisonbooks AT gmail.com.
4) ANTI-NAZI RALLY IN GREENSBORO! (SAT, 8/29, 3 PM)
Please come out to support this anti-fascist action in Greensboro,
organized by a coalition of community groups including the Greensboro
Revolutionary Autonomous Front (email grafbeyondgraf AT yahoo.com for
more info):

DEFEAT RACISM AT HOME!
The National Socialist Movement is holding their 2009 yearly
convention in Greensboro on SATURDAY, AUG 29th. This group prides
itself as being the largest Neo-Nazi organization active in the US.
They have chosen Greensboro to hold this convention, and it is no
coincidence that it is close to the 30th anniversary of the Greensboro
Massacre, in which klansmen/nazis opened fire in a predominantly black
neighborhood.
We have the perfect opportunity to show these nazis that they are NOT
WELCOME in our home. Please attend a counter demonstration at
Hamburger Square in down town Greensboro (CORNER OF S. ELM AND W.
McGEE) AT 3 PM SHARP on SATURDAY, AUG 29th.
All people and families are welcome!
Please bring signs, banners, and your spirit for equality.
Circulate this message as extensively as you can.
THE FIRST STEP TO DEFEATING RACISM IN OUR WORLD IS TO SHOW IT IS NOT
WELCOME IN OUT HOME

our previous meetings in Chapel Hill and Raleigh, we'll be hearing
reportbacks and making concrete plans for resistance and actions being
planned, and discuss how we can continue to build momentum locally.

INTERNATIONALIST PRISON BOOKS COLLECTIVE
The Internationalist sponsors a program that sends free books and
literature to people incarcerated in Mississippi and Alabama. Since
2006 the Books to Prisoners collective has mailed educational
materials to thousands of prisoners, building solidarity with networks
of activists inside and out of prison agitating for justice and
alternatives to the prison system, while meeting a direct and urgent
need. There are many ways to get involved:
-Come fill requests at the weekly book-wrapping, which takes place
every Sunday from 1-4 PM at 218 N. Graham St. in Chapel Hill.
-DONATE books by dropping them off at the Internationalist!
Particularly in demand are dictionaries, thesauruses, African-American
history, culture, and fiction, self-help, Spanish language,
GED/education, and more (paperbacks only).
