Carolina at Chapel Hill where she received a degree in performance
studies. While in North Carolina she also received the Durham County
Emerging Artist Grant.
Jasm=E9 was brought into the industry by the Wyclef Jean of the
Refugee Camp, and has opened for such luminaries as George Duke,
Stanley Clarke, Al DiMeola, Jean-Luc Ponty, Maceo Parker, Boney James,
Al Jarreau, Jonathan Butler and Peter White. The highly esteemed bass
master Anthony Jackson is even featured on two songs on her album. She
has also packed countless historic venues in New York City such as
CBGB, Caf=E9 Wha?, The Bitter End, The Village Underground, Joe's Pub
and Malik Yoba's Soul Caf=E9.
In addition to being a talented performer, Jasm=E9 is also an
accomplished songwriter, having co-written the song "Holla!" as
performed by The Baha Men (of legendary "Who Let The Dogs Out?" fame).
"Holla!" has been used internationally in: "Garfield: The Movie";
"Kicking and Screaming" (with Will Ferrell); the television shows "Las
Vegas," "Malcolm in the Middle" and "JAG"; and the video game "Beach
Volleyball: Dead or Alive"
=95 10P Mysti Mayhem (folk/folk rock/indie)
Singer/Guitarist/Composer with 5 albums, the most recent being
Diversity, a $50,000 fan funded album via German label Sellaband. She
has performed with Mike Farris (Screamin Cheetah Wheelies), Damon

London, Amsterdam, Portugal, and throughout the United States. Her

Binanay. Oh, ladies, this is a show you don't want to miss!!
=95 10P Mary Rockers Johnson (americana)
=93A voice built for singing of lingering touches (check out her
gorgeous Two Step) and songwriting skills built for the subtle but
lasting detail.=94- Independent Weekly "The musical backing serves as
flickering streetlights, directing you to the voice and words of one
Mary Johnson Rockers down below. And that=92s where the brightest lamp
should shine.=94 -Rick Cornell in review of No Place for Birds to Rest
(Independent Weekly)
=95 11P Down River Bluegrass Band (acoustic bluegrass)
Down River has quickly emerged as one of the North Carolina Piedmont's
premiere bluegrass bands. The group has cultivated a traditional
bluegrass sound that transports folks to a simpler time and place.
Listeners will enjoy the sweet and soulful vocals of Hope Marasco.
Hope grew up on a small farm without electricity or running water
where making music by candlelight was her family=92s favorite pastime.
Because she was not raised listening to recorded music, her vocal
shaping and high lonesome sound are uniquely her own. With solid
bluegrass instrumentation from the guitar, mandolin, banjo, and bass,
Down River will keep your toes tapping and your face smiling! On some
numbers, you=92ll see some hot steppin=92 buck dancing that you definitely
won=92t want to miss!

Saturday August 15 - $5 Cover
=95 10P The Dry Heathens (rock/punk/indie)
"the band hammers at feedback-and-vitriol punk laced with shots of
hook and twang, like Drive By Trucker Mike Cooley woodshedding with
Social Distortion" =97 Grayson Currin, Independent Weekly
"The Dry Heathens craft massive songs of raucous energy - air-strike
epics that inspire equal parts emotion and movement."=97 Jamie Williams,
The Daily Tar Heel
=95 11:30P Pipe (rock/punk)
Formed in that music crucible, Chapel Hill, Pipe forged a ragged rock
sound that drew on both the raw garage of '70s bands like the Sonics,
punk's irreverent attitude and the post-punk/indie rock attack of the
'80s underground. In 1992, with a lineup of Ron Liberti (vocals), Mike
Kenlan (guitar), Dave Alworth (bass), and former Superchunk drummer
Chuck Garrison, the band released the six-song Ball Peen EP (Sonic
Bubblegum). But Kenlan, who with Garrison also played in Small (later
changed to Small 23), left Pipe to concentrate on his other band.
Clifton Lee Mann, the bassist of the area's legendary '80s punkabilly
band, Bad Checks, was recruited to play guitar until a permanent
replacement could be found. But Mann and Liberti found they worked
well together splitting the music and lyric writing duties, so Mann
stayed on as the full-time guitarist, and the band's new lineup
recorded their first single, "You're Soaking in It," in 1993 on Amish
Records, followed by their first full-length, Six Days to Bellus
(Jesus Christ) in 1994. A riotous album of rumbling rock, it had a lot
more in common with the Dead Boys than Nirvana and grunge. The band
toured with Bad Brains, and upon returning home, began work on their
second full-length. International Cement (Jesus Christ) was released
in 1995, along with the "Raceway Park" single, again on Amish Records.
The band toured with local faves Polvo and Archers of Loaf, but upon
returning home, Alworth quit the band and moved to Seattle. Greg Adams
replaced him on bass and they started work on their third album,
Slowboy, released on Merge in 1997. (Merge then also re-released their
two earlier albums and several singles.) A fully realized effort,
Slowboy puts the sludge, motor oil, and road dirt back into garage
rock. However, their tour with kindred spirits the New Bomb Turks
proved ill-fated. Playing in Louisville, Garrison broke his hand
signaling an early end to the tour. During Garrison's recovery, Mann
crushed the tip of his left ring finger, sidelining him for six
months. With the band's momentum flagging and nursing his injury, Mann
quit and was replaced with original band guitarist Kenlan, but this
lineup only survived a few shows before collapsing in the fall of
1999. Liberti and Mann reunited in 2000 with the Ghost of the British
Soldier Who Loved to Rock (shortened to the Ghost of Rock). Kenlan
joined Ashley Stove on guitar in 2001.

Sunday August 16
=95 7:30P Aaron Mills Project - Sunday Night Jazz Jam
Starting at 7:30, Open Jam at 9

If you are in any way a fan of jazz, this is not to be missed !!!
Aaron Mills, best known as the audacious bassist of classic funk act
Cameo, has inspired a generation of groovy musicians, but his long
time love affair with jazz has inspired The Aaron Mills Project.
Aaron has been playing at the Cafe for a few months now, along with
Wayne Kee, Bobby Hinton, Warren Fraizer and others. Aaron has brought
Sunday night jazz back to the Cafe in a format that includes a cast of
regulars as well as featured guest musicians every week. Towards the
end of the evening, the night becomes an open jam, so, if anyone wants
to come blow their horn....
