Saturday, August 1
Don Dixon (http://www.myspace.com/dondixonsmusic)
Mitch Easter (http://www.mitcheaster.com/)
The Cosmopolitans (http://wildmooseparty.com)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

The Cosmopolitans were an early-80s NYC New Wave/girl-group/dance troupe with strong NC ties -- mastermind Jamie Sims went to UNC, and the Cosmos' hit 3-song EP was recorded at Mitch Easter's original Drive-In Studio in Winston-Salem. This is their first reunion since they broke up in 1982.

Saturday, August 1
Birds of Avalon (http://www.myspace.com/birdsofavalon)
Hammer No More the Fingers (http://www.hnmtf.com)
Whatever Brains (http://www.myspace.com/whateverbrains)
Pour House, Raleigh

This is a CD-release for the deeply psychedelic new Birds of Avalon record Uncanny Valley. It's swirly as all get out, more Echoplex than Big Muff, although most of the songs still clock in at well under 5 minutes.

Joining BoA are indie-rock power-trio Hammer No More the Fingers and post-Buzzcocks fuzz-punks Whatever Brains.

Sunday, August 2
The White Cascade (http://www.myspace.com/thewhitecascade)
Astronomers (http://www.myspace.com/weareastronomers)

Tuesday, August 4
Vaughn Chitnismith
Jay Cartwright
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Vaughn Chitnismith is a collaboration between Danny Vaughn (ex-Hourly Radio, ex-Mothlight, ex-Noncanon) and an amazing young sitar player from Raleigh named Viswas Chitnis. Lemming Malloy frontman Jay Cartwright opens the show.

Wednesday, August 5
Gray Young (http://www.myspace.com/grayyoung)
The Octopus Project (http://www.theoctopusproject.com/)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

Wednesday, August 5
Pinche Gringo (http://www.myspace.com/pinchegringoband)
Davila 666 (http://www.myspace.com/davila666)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Pinche Gringo is the 1- or 2-person garage band (depending on the day/time/circumstance) of former Spinn Josh Johnson.

Thursday, August 6
Fin Fang Foom (http://www.lovitt.com/artists/finfangfoom.html)
Maple Stave (http://www.maplestave.com)
Auxes (http://www.myspace.com/auxes)
Tir Na Nog, Raleigh

This is the weekly Local Beers, Local Bands show. Maple Stave you probably know about, since they play out fairly frequently. Taut, wiry mathrock.

Fin Fang Foom have been playing their particular brand of thunderstormy postpunk around the Triangle for well over a decade; their rumble is utterly distinctive.

Auxes is the current band of Milemarker guitarist Dave Laney.

Thursday, August 6
Jew(s) & Catholic(s) (http://www.myspace.com/jewsandcatholics)
River City Ransom
The Anti-bubbles
The Pinhook, Durham

12:00 - Jews and Catholics
11:00 - River City Ransom
10:00 - The Anti-bubbles

Thursday, August 6

The Duke and the King (http://www.myspace.com/dukeandtheking)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Thursday, August 6
Huguenots (http://www.myspace.com/thehuguenotsmusic)
Terrance and the Tall Boys (http://www.myspace.com/wegettall)
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh

Huguenots are an exuberant young pop band with a fondness for trim suits & 60s British-invasion sounds.

Thursday, August 6
Blag'ard (http://www.blagard.com/)
Ampline (http://www.ampline.net)
Atomic Garden (http://www.myspace.com/atomicgarden)
Reservoir, Carrboro

Friday, August 7
Goner (http://www.gonertheband.com/)
I Was Totally Destroying It (http://www.reverbnation.com/iwastotallydestroyingit)
Free Electric State (http://www.myspace.com/freeelectricstate)
The Pinhook, Durham

12:00 - I Was Totally Destroying It
11:00 - Goner
10:00 - Free Electric State

This is an EP-release for the new I Was Totally Destroying It. They're joined by the JAMC-style reverbo-distorto jamz of Free Electric State, and the organ-driven bitter-old-man rock of Goner (who are, in fact, one of the finest live bands working in the Triangle -- miss them at your own risk).

Friday, August 7
Dark Meat (http://www.myspace.com/darkmeats)
Whatever Brains (http://www.myspace.com/whateverbrains)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Whatever Brains have a brand new 7" coming out any-day-now (possibly even as I write this, depending on Mr. UPS). Haven't heard it, but can't imagine it being anything but great.

Friday, August 7
Leadfoot (http://www.leadfoot.net/)
Chrome Plated Apostles (http://www.demonbeach.com)
Pitbull
Pour House, Raleigh

Friday, August 7
Billy Sugarfix (http://www.soundclick.com/bands/8/billysugarfix.htm)
Violet Vector and the Lovely Lovelies (http://www.myspace.com/violetvectorandthelovelylovelies)
Gross Ghost (http://www.myspace.com/grossghost)
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh

Violet Vector and the Lovely Lovelies have just released their second EP, "EP II," and it's even better than their first. The psych is harder-edged in places (especially the first cut, "Grass is Glowing") but the vocals still ring out, and the ba-ba-baaas are as sweet as ever.

Saturday, August 8
This Thing We Did Fest (http://www.myspace.com/ttwdfest)
Old Gilliam Mill Park, Sanford

Holy crap, check out the lineup for this fest that the guys from Dr. Powerful (including ex-Polvo drummer Eddie Watkins) dreamed up:

TTWD (http://www.myspace.com/ttwdfest) is an all day music festival held at the Old Gilliam Mill Park (http://www.oldgilliammill.org/) outside of Sanford, NC on August 8, 2009. The park is a replica of a 19th century grist mill, and it is a great place to see music. Bands play in an amphitheatre style setting on a stage that looks like the front porch of an old shack. It has sort of an “Austin City Limits” feel. There are campsites with electricity, running water, bathrooms, and showers. There is also a full kitchen onsite, and food and beverages will be provided by Bella Bistro (http://www.bellabistrodowntown.com/).

The lineup we have this year is nothing short of incredible:

- Hammer No More the Fingers (http://www.myspace.com/hnmtf)
- Auxes (http://www.myspace.com/auxes)
- Fin Fang Foom (http://www.myspace.com/finfangfoom)
- I Was Totally Destroying It (http://www.myspace.com/iwtdi)
- Embarrassing Fruits (http://www.myspace.com/embarrassingfruitsband)
- Caverns (http://www.myspace.com/caverns)
- Renminbi (http://www.myspace.com/renminbi)
- Vinny Vegas (http://www.myspace.com/vinnyvegas)
- White Tiger & the Bed of Roses (http://www.myspace.com/tigersandroses)
- Dr. Powerful (http://www.myspace.com/drpowerful)
- Starmount (http://www.myspace.com/starmountmusic)
- Hymn All the Fires (http://www.myspace.com/hymnallthefires)
- Ol' North State (http://www.myspace.com/olnorthstate)

If you want to come out, point your GPS to 4613 Carbonton Rd, SANFORD, North Carolina 27330 (This is the closest physical address to the park. The park itself is on Hwy 42/Carbonton Road in between Wakefield Road and Pickard Road.)

Saturday, August 8
De La Soul (http://www.myspace.com/delasoul)
Kaze (http://www.souldojo.com/)
Big Pooh (http://www.myspace.com/rapperbigpooh)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

Saturday, August 8
Nomo (http://www.nomomusic.com/)
DJ Jason Perlmutter (http://www.myspace.com/jasonperlmutter)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Jason Perlmutter is a Carolina Soul obsessive, the man behind the amazing Carolina Soul compilation CD that came out a couple of years ago, and a longtime WXYC DJ. (I once saw him DJ at an XYC/XDU prom, where he played an entire set of vintage big-hole 45's without an adapter, intentionally off-center)

Saturday, August 8
The Breaks
Killer Filler (http://www.myspace.com/killerfiller)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Killer Filler are the lounge/surf instrumental outfit fronted by Crispy Bess & featuring the dulcet tones of Lud guitarist Bryon Settle. The Breaks are a glammy rockband of local veterans, including former What Peggy Wants frontman John Ensslin.

Sunday, August 9
Keegan DeWitt (http://www.keegandewitt.com/)
The Tomahawks (http://www.myspace.com/jeffcrawfordmusic)
Annie and the Beekeepers (http://www.myspace.com/annielynch)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Sunday, August 9
Franz Nicolay (http://www.myspace.com/franznicolay)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Franz Nicolay is the handlebar-mustachioed keyboard player in the Hold Steady; I think he's also in (or has been in) World Inferno/Friendship Society.

Tuesday, August 11
The Poonhounds
Dirty Little Heaters (http://www.myspace.com/thedirtylittleheaters)
Left Outlet (http://www.myspace.com/leftoutlet)
Richard Bacchus & the Luckiest Girls (http://www.myspace.com/richardbacchus)
Pour House, Raleigh

This is listed as Parnin-Palooza, and it's a night of dirty, charismatic rock-n-roll.

Tuesday, August 11
Future Islands (http://www.myspace.com/futureislands)
Lonnie Walker (http://www.myspace.com/lonniewalker)
Motor Skills
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Lonnie Walker are from Greenville & Raleigh, and they make indie-rock that reminds me of Dylany Pavement. Future Islands used to be from Greenville, but they relocated to Baltimore, where their brand of sweet Casiotone keyboard-driven indie-dance-pop is more at home.

Tuesday, August 11
Birds & Arrows (http://www.myspace.com/birdsandarrows)
Where the Buffalo Roamed (http://www.myspace.com/wherethebuffaloroamed)
The Native Young
Nightlight, Chapel Hill
