Camera Obscura (http://www.camera-obscura.net/)
Anni Rossi (http://www.4ad.com/anni-rossi/)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

Saturday, June 20
Shipwrecker (http://www.myspace.com/shipwreckermuzak)
Battle Rockets (http://www.myspace.com/battlerockets)
Free Electric State (http://www.myspace.com/freeelectricstate)
The Pinhook, Durham

12:00 - Free Electric State
11:00 - Shipwrecker
10:00 - The Battle Rockets

F.E.S. are the new band with Dave & Shirle of Ex-Members, plus Pinhook
co-owner Nick Williams, and local drummer-about-town Tony Stiglitz (Jett
Rink, Doleful Lions, literally 4000 other bands). Shipwrecker are
Durham's own lurching country-and-nautical outfit. Battle Rockets are an
instrumental duo.

The Moaners (http://www.themoaners.com/)
Kitty Box & the Johnnys
(http://www.indyweek.com/gyrobase/Content?oid=oid%3A40789)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

The Cave's website bills this as "Chatham County Pajama Party at the
"Ski Lodge" w/ The Moaners, Twilighter, Taz Halloween's Kittybox & The
Johnnys"

Sunday, June 21
The Paper Chase (http://www.thepaperchaseband.com/)

Monday, June 22
Americans in France (http://www.myspace.com/americansinfrance)
Whatever Brains (http://www.myspace.com/whateverbrains)
Francis Harold and the Holograms
(http://www.myspace.com/francisharoldandtheholograms)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Oh man, the two best art/punk/what-the/don't-give-a fuck bands currently
playing in the Triangle, Americans in France and Whatever Brains,
together in the same subterranean grotto? Call in sick Tuesday.

Tuesday, June 23
Femme Covert (http://www.femmecovert.filcoproductions.com/)
Death Domain
Masses Masses
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Wednesday, June 24
Alina Simone (http://www.girlwithguitar.net/)
Sarah P. Duke Gardens, Durham

Alina Simone spent a good bit of time living around here, though I
believe she's mostly relocated to NY at this point. No matter: she was
never much of a regionalist anyway (at least not a Southern-US
regionalist). Her own material is a bracing mix of jagged electric
guitars, drums, and her whisper-to-wail vocals. But she's equally
well-known for her recent album of covers of the murdered Russian
folk-punk musician Yanka Dyagileva, "Everyone is Crying Out To Me, Beware."

Shows are at 7:00 p.m. and are staged outdoors, on the lawn behind the
visitors center at Sarah P. Duke Gardens. Thus far the rain has been
remarkably cooperative, offering just a tiny baptismal sprinkle over the
last song of Megafaun's set.

Wednesday, June 24
Bellafea (http://www.bellafea.com/)
Maple Stave (http://www.maplestave.com)
Ume (http://www.umemusic.com/urgentsea/index.php)
The Pinhook, Durham

I tried to go to a show at the Pinhook last week, and the first band
actually started *before* the posted time. Which, for a weeknight show,
is actually preferable, unless you're trying to see the first band &
your schedule isn't flexible enough for early arrival. Anyway, FYI; the
posted sequence is as follows:

11:00 - Bellafea
10:00 - Maple Stave
9:00 - Ume

I probably don't have to supply the lowdown on these, but briefly:
Bellafea went from duo to trio with the addition of Fin Fang Foom's
Eddie Sanchez, but the power of their wallop increased a hundredfold.
Maple Stave are a mathy trio, but in a highly explosive manner. You can
be fairly certain that if they find a groove and lock into it, mayhem
will follow close behind.

Wednesday, June 24
919Noise Showcase
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Wednesday, June 24
Telepathe (http://www.myspace.com/telepathe)
Lemonade (http://www.myspace.com/bananasandecstasy)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Wednesday, June 24
Have Nots (http://www.sonicbids.com/havenots)
Robobilly (http://www.myspace.com/robobilly)
The Reckless Hearts (http://www.therecklesshearts.com/)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Wednesday, June 24
Battle Rockets (http://www.myspace.com/battlerockets)
Goodbye, Titan (http://www.myspace.com/loudestsilenceever)
Gifts From Enola (http://www.myspace.com/giftsfromenola)
Reservoir, Carrboro

Wednesday, June 24
Hearts and Daggers (http://www.heartsanddaggers.com/ )
The Itchy Hearts
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh

Typing with my hands clasped behind my back, to prevent pitiful puns
involving these bands' names.

Thursday, June 25
Joe Romeo & the Orange County Volunteers
(http://www.myspace.com/joeromeomusic)
The Tomahawks (http://www.myspace.com/jeffcrawfordmusic)
The Pinhook, Durham

11:00 - Joe Romeo
10:00 - The Tomahawks

Joe Romeo put out an excellent country-rock album last year with his
band, the Orange County Volunteers. The Tomahawks are a local supergroup
of sorts, fronted by Jeff Crawford (Roman Candle).

Thursday, June 25
The Black Hollies (http://www.theblackhollies.com)
Violet Vector and the Lovely Lovelies
(http://www.myspace.com/violetvectorandthelovelylovelies)
Huguenots (http://www.myspace.com/thehuguenotsmusic)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Triple-bill of 60s revivalism, featuring the day-glo girl-group sounds
of Violet Vector, the slim-suited early-Beatles rave-ups of the
Huguenots, and the retro-garage stylings of the Black Hollies.

Thursday, June 25
Twilighter (http://twilighter.net/)
Salt to Bitters (http://www.myspace.com/salttobitters)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Friday, June 26
Joe Romeo & the Orange County Volunteers
(http://www.myspace.com/joeromeomusic)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Joe Romeo & his Orange County Volunteers are holding down both the early
*and* the late slots tonight, so you should easily be able to fit 'em in
to your plans. Well worth doing so.

Friday, June 26
Hammer No More the Fingers (http://www.hnmtf.com)
Thought Speak
Sunfold (http://www.myspace.com/sunfold)
On Photon (http://myspace.com/onphotonmusic)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Sunfold are the Annuals alter-ego that focuses on the songwriting of
guitarist Kenny Florence. Hammer No More the Fingers probably played
your prom, your cousin's wedding, your office party, and the punkrock
house show down the street last week, so I'm assuming you've seen 'em by
now.

Friday, June 26
Goner (http://www.gonertheband.com/)
Proof (http://www.prooftheband.org)
Left Outlet (http://www.myspace.com/leftoutlet)
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh

If you haven't seen Goner lately, you might've forgotten just how hooky
(yet brutally honest/real) their songs are, and just how hard they rock
them. "For a keyboard band" qualifier totally not required, and never
has been.

Saturday, June 27
Malebolgia (http://malebolgia.com)
Worse Than Birth (http://myspace.com/worsethanbirth)
Arbitrary (http://myspace.com/arbitrarync)
Marvell Building, Durham

This is a 4:00 p.m. matinee show celebrating Emma Goldman's birthday. I
want to assume it's all-ages (it's a freaking anarchist hardcore
matinee, for fucksake) but the listing on MySpace says 18+. Surely
that's just to throw The Man off the scent (though it'll be pretty hard
to avoid the scent of a buncha crusty anarchists at 4:00 on a late June
afternoon).

Saturday, June 27
American Aquarium (http://www.americanaquarium.com/)
Luego (http://luegomusic.com/)
Holsapple and Stamey (http://www.holsapplestamey.com)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

Peter Holsapple, Chris Stamey, and their compadres in The dBs altered
the face of Southern Pop music forever in the 1980s (though most of the
altering took place after their relocation from NC to NYC). Holsapple &
Stamey renewed their collaboration briefly in the '90s with the album
Mavericks, and have now come together once again to release hERE aND nOw.

Saturday, June 27
The Ex-Monkeys (http://www.myspace.com/theexmonkeys)
Ear Pwr (http://www.myspace.com/earpwr)
Adventure (http://www.myspace.com/adventuresound)
The Pinhook, Durham

12:00 - Ear Pwr
11:00 - Adventure
10:00 - The Ex-Monkeys

Ex-Ashevillians Ear Pwr have up & moved to Baltimore, but they're still
the same crazed lovable dorky sing-song electrofreaks they always were.

Saturday, June 27
The Houstons
Mark Holland's Rhythm Force (http://www.myspace.com/mhollandsrhythmforce)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Saturday, June 27
Fake Problems (http://www.fakeproblems.com)
Kiss Kiss
Resist Not (http://www.resistnot.net)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Sunday, June 28
Wooden Birds
Other Lives
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

The one Wooden Birds song I've heard, "False Alarm," has a bit of the
easy loping pleasure of Facebook-era Yo La Tengo, or Neil Young's more
pastoral moments.

Sunday, June 28
Conshafter (http://www.conshafter.com/)
100 Yorktown (http://www.geocities.com/onehundredyorktown/)
The Groves
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Monday, June 29
The Winter Sounds (http://www.thewintersounds.com)
Pneurotics (http://www.myspace.com/pneurotics)
Gift Horse
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Monday, June 29
Anniversary Club (http://www.myspace.com/anniversaryclub)
Weekends (http://www.myspace.com/weekendsmusic)
Christopher Jones (http://www.myspace.com/devilsridinghorse)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Tuesday, June 30
Embarrassing Fruits (http://www.myspace.com/embarrassingfruitsband)
Wild Fiction (http://www.myspace.com/wildfictions)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

90s-vintage indie-rock from gtr/bass/drums power trio Embarrassing Fruits.

Tuesday, June 30
Trio Slicnaton (http://www.slicnaton.com)
The Pinhook, Durham

Tuesday, June 30
Tiny Vipers
Balmorhea (http://balmorheamusic.com/)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

One song apiece by each of these bands has me thinking that Balmorhea
are a mid-sized instrumental band who mesh banjo, guitar, piano, drums,
bass & violin in a manner reminiscent of Shark Quest; and that Tiny
Vipers are one of those minimal arpeggiated-guitar and voice outfits.

Tuesday, June 30
Jokes & Jokes & Jokes (http://www.myspace.com/jokesjokesjokes)
The Additives (http://www.myspace.com/joeryanmrbridgeport)
Slow Lane (http://www.myspace.com/slowlanerock)
Reservoir, Carrboro
